Locked Screen Res?

I got a new PC a couple of months, together with a much larger monitor, a few months ago and haven't played much M2TW until a couple of days ago. I'm now running Win7 and have little experience with it.

My screen resolution appears to be locked as 1024x768, despite the size of the mouse pointer changing. The HUD is absolutely massive, on both maps, and even the prompts to quit, in the main menu, are extra large compared to what they used to be.

I have been playing Stainless Steel 6.1 (and about to d/l the most up-to-date version), and haven't had the opportunity to check TATW or Kingdoms yet. I don't imagine the mod makes a difference, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Any ideas? I have all my other settings at the highest they will go but this massive UI is UGLY (and slightly blurry since the icons are clearly meant to be a smaller size).

You change the resolution in graphics options when you start the game. Mine is set at 1280 x 1024 but it's all my monitor is good for. Check in there.

I am aware of how and where to change the settings (how else could I have everything at max?). The point is that regardless of the settings I choose, it seems locked to 1024x768. I believe 1280x1024 is what I was set to on my old PC and seeing this huge UI is really distracting.

Have you looked to see if your "preferences.txt" file is checked as Read Only?

There's more than a couple of things that look wrong, and don't match with the Options settings, on that. It's not set to Read-Only.

Let's see if we can force it.

Edit the battle_resolution and campaign_resolution to 1280 x 1024, save the file, set the file to read-only so the game can't overwrite it, and start the game to see if it works.

If it holds, you can set the rest the same way.

Nothing changed and the resolution in the Options still said 1600x1200. Could that be the wrong file? Among other things that are wrong is that, while the Options says my Antialiasing is set 8x, this appears to have Antialiasing off.

It had my AA set to 6x and off. I had to set it by hand. It's whatever the game engine picks for "default" for your computer. The age of the game versus the new hardware, we are now doing the job.

What happens if you set the file's resolutions to 1600 x 1200.

Nothing happens, either to the in-game Options or to the game itself.

Maybe this is a UAC problem? When you installed did you turn it off? Are you sure that you're installing M2 under the Admin account?

This old game does not like the the UAC....
