Error on startup after installing patch, doesn't give explanation

How it went:
1: Install M2TW. Play for a few months. Don't adjust anything, unpack anything, or touch anything out of fear of making something go horribly wrong.
2: Download patch 1.2 using installer that came with it. All is well.
3: Download patch 1.3, attempt to install, can't remember what happened, don't think it worked. Game still works.
4: Computer gets virus (possibly unrelated). System restore to many days back, no longer have any patches, but have files in my downloads folder (although neither of them work).
5: Download 1.2 again. Install, using installer, same as before.
6: Double click desktop icon, get little popup window with "play" button.
7: Press "play". Shortly afterwards, I get an error message with a yellow cross, but no words, at all, just the little popup message thingy, completely blank save for the yellow cross. Press "ok" game doesn't load.

Edit: After number 4, I had to reinstall the game for some reason... sorry the details are so fuzzy.

Number 7 says "Time to reinstall".
Your #4 led to #7 as this game and System Restore don't get along when you get a virus.
Did you run a deep virus scan before the restore? If not, odds are it's still there someplace.

How would I do that?

Also, as per my edit, I already have reinstalled. Mind you, since posting this thread a little while ago I have uninstalled and deleted everything M2TW that I can find, and am reinstalling. Works fine before patches, will shortly find out how it goes with 1.2
