D hard disk doesnt work anymore.

I have 2 hard disks on my computer, C and D.

But my D stopped working today, whenever i double-click on it, it brings up an error, whenever i start my computer, it says sth about checking files, but it does it so slowly that it may take more than 2-3 days to complete.

I was gone for 2 hours, and it had only done 1000 out of 185186...

My C hard disk is fine, so my computer isnt messed up, i can use everything i have in the C hard disk.

But i cant use anything from my D hard disk.

Can you help me?

Did you check if your SATA cable is still connected properly?

Are those 2 physical hard disks or 2 separate partition? If physical hard disks then I'd check for cables, otherwise chances are it has died. If its partition I'd try some disk repairing software.

To the above poster: I have no idea what you are talking about.

How do i check that SATA cable thing?

The error is that it cant be opened because its damaged and it cant be read.

Drop your DX log on us and we'll be able to tell if it's a partition or a separate drive. Here's how:

DxDiag is easy to run if you have any knowledge of Windows. Go to the "Start" button and in that menu choose "Run Program" option ("Run..." in Vista IIRC). In the pop-up field type "dxdiag" and press enter. This is the DirectX test program - let it finish the test. After the test is finished choose the button toward the bottom labeled "Save All Information..." and save it to your desktop. Next open up this forum and post the results by copying and pasting directly to the forum. Please don't post attachments as they take up more space and time - just copy and paste. Please post ALL info and if you can please wrap it in a spoiler tag to minimize page size.

It's a separate drive. It's also not showing used or available space which is not good.

I hope you have a backup somewhere. You can open the side of the case and check to make sure the cable is seated properly. But in reality if the drive can be seen but not read then it is likely damaged.

Have you installed anything different to D:\ recently?

Lastly, the drive may be salvageable but you'd need to reformat it first and there is no guarantee. You'll definitely lose any files on it if you do so. Good luck!

I am definetaly not going to reformat it and lose everything i have on it, DEFINETALY not.

Well... i was angry last night, the only thing i was trying to do was take a screenshot, and the game kept crashing at the loading screen, and the game kept going back to the desktop.

So.... i kind of...ehm... punched my PC's Tower

I put a bit too much force on the punch, so, the place below the place where the disk tray is, went inside a bit.

Then chances are that the cable became loose, a punch through the case should not break a HDD. Although the game crashing can be a sign of screwed HDD.

Have you tried "open seasme?"

if that fails try unscrewing the side panel from the back of the case, their should be two screws holding it in place

I opened up my computer, and saw lots of dust inside.

I cleaned it up and uninstalled something, and restarted my computer, and i realised that it got a lot faster than before, so i thought i should try out that disk checking again which my pc was trying to perform at the start, and it suddenly got dramatically faster and it completed in less than 5 minutes.

And when my PC went to the main menu, it was a lot faster, and all the problems with my D disk were fixed.

Wow.... all of this because of some stupid dust...

Doh! Keeping dust out of your pc is more important than you could imagine.
