Chavez is a great man and I wish him the best of luck. Same with Evo Morales and Fidel Castro. Their democracies are certainly no more false than the American model. America believes anything other than a democracy with two centre-right parties automatically becomes a communist dicatorship.

I think most people around the world would agree that a country where there is only one legal political party and where political speech that upsets the leadership is banned and punished would no longer qualify as a democracy, whether that leadership was put into place by force (Castro), or democratically elected (Chavez).

Chavez's dictatorship has not been consolidated yet, but he is clearly working on it. While Morales in Bolivia does have close ties to both Chavez and Castro, he has only been in office for a few days so it is hard to see where he is going yet.

That said, Pat Robertson is clearly off his rocker, and has been for quite some time. I find it hilarious that he is still so popular in some circles... maybe it's like when the popular kids keep that one dorky fat girl around just to laugh at her. Maybe evangelical Christians have a sense of humor after all!

Venezuela is an open democracy with more than one party. it is just that Chavez's party and his allies are beating the crap out of the opposition. He has a 77% approval rating. An idiotic move by the opposition to boycott the recent elections have left them with no representation in the government. The opposition has been more undemocratic than Chavez has been.

His approval already fell to 62.5% and will keep falling...

    I wonder...

If I dial 911 right now and tell them Pat Robertson is calling for an assasination of another human being (albiet not a U.s. citizen) will they go and arrest him? Just because that dillhole is rich and religious doesnt mean he should be untouchable. I'm really serious, I want him brought up on charges already.

Kowtowing mouthpieces for US imperialist propaganda such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch would disagree with you on the democratic bit.

Well I thought I'd post this here, its a quote from the official U.S. law having to do with threats and extortion:

CHAPTER 41 - EXTORTION AND THREATS

    -MISC1-
    Sec.
    871. Threats against President and successors to the
    Presidency.
    872. Extortion by officers or employees of the United
    States.
    873. Blackmail.
    874. Kickbacks from public works employees.
    875. Interstate communications.
    876. Mailing threatening communications.
    877. Mailing threatening communications from foreign
    country.
    878. Threats and extortion against foreign officials,
    official guests, or internationally protected
    persons.
    879. Threats against former Presidents and certain other
    persons.
    880. Receiving the proceeds of extortion.

So theyre charging Philip Bailey with sec 871, but it probably wont stick and he'll walk. Pat Robertson hasnt broken a law here....yet....but we can hope.

edit-if Chavez or Castro were in the U.S. and someone threatened them, they could be charged as well, but theres no law about threatening people outside the U.S.

He has taken steps to gain more power no doubt...but he has done it "democratically" because his party won enough seats to do it. The media law has not been used. Like I said, there are still problems with police in the country, but Chavez does not control them all, with some controlled by opposition.

Must be pretty cool living in one of the many sprawling slums of caracas, picking garbage for a living while your wife spends 10 hours a day in a bread line. Failed south american states are always a great example of human government: Examples of what not to do.

I would love to see Chaves demanding an apology from the US government for this. They won't apologise so Venezuelans will probably start boycotting US products. Soon after they will start to burn US flags, occupy EU union offices, threaten to kill Americans working in Venezuela and storm the US embassy.

Am I mixing things up here?
