Bulgaria : A successor of the First Bulgarian Empire, it reached the peak of its power under Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. Up until 1256, the Second Bulgarian Empire was the dominant power in the Balkans. The Byzantines were defeated in several major battles, and in 1205 the newly-established Latin Empire was crushed in the battle of Adrianople by Emperor Kaloyan. His nephew, Ivan Asen II (1218–1241), defeated the Despotate of Epirus and made Bulgaria a regional power once again. However, in the late 13th century the Empire declined under the constant invasions of Tatars, Byzantines, Hungarians, Serbs, and internal instability and revolts.
The Tatar hegemony continued to 1300, when after the death of Nogai Khan, Bessarabia was ceded to the new Bulgarian Emperor Theodore Svetoslav. Theodore returned Bessarabia and most of byzantine northern Thrace to Bulgaria. After 1307, he led peaceful policy towards all neighbors which resulted in expanded trade and economy and he also dealt with the separatists among the nobility, including his uncle. The sudden death of his son and successor George Terter II, led to a brief period of confusion that ended with the rise of Michael Shishman.
Michael was energetic and ambitious and led aggressive foreign policy against the Byzantine Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia. He was the last medieval Bulgarian ruler who aimed at military and political hegemony of the Bulgarian Empire over the Balkans and the last one who attempted to seize Constantinople. Unfortunately, when in 1330 Michael Asen III marched on Serbia with a large force with Wallachian and Moldovan allies, he was caught unprepared near Velbăžd (Kjustendil) on 28 July 1330 by the Serbian king Stefan Uroš III Dečanski (who had just received his reinforcements) and was crushed. Badly wounded, as his horse was killed under him, Michael Asen III was captured by the Serbians. He expired from his wounds on the fourth day of his captivity.
After the death of Michael, the Serbian king attempted to invade Bulgaria. Meeting determined resistance, the king negotiate that the Bulgarian nobility accept his nephew Ivan Stefan. But Ivan Stefan fled to Tarnovo and the conspirators placed his cousin Ivan Alexander on the throne. The new emperor began his rule by dealing with internal problems and external threats from Bulgaria's neighbors, the Byzantine Empire and Serbia, as well as leading his empire into a period of economic recovery and cultural and religious renaissance. In 1331 Ivan Alexander campaigned around Adrianople and re-conquered northeastern Thrace. Meanwhile, Stefan Uroš IV Dušan deposed his father Stefan Uroš III Dečanski and became Serbian king in 1331. This led to an alliance between the two countries which was cemented by the marriage of the Serbian king to a sister of Ivan Alexander- Helena of Bulgaria. At the same time Ivan Alexander defeated his uncle Belaur and won a victory over Andronikos III Palaiologos in the battle of Rusokastro.
Using the civil war in the Roman Empire now is the time for Bulgaria to gain more lands that will help to regain more economic power and to fulfill the dream of the Bulgarian emperors from the time of Simeon The Great -to enter Constantinople. At the same time the danger of growing power in Hungary is even more threatening for the northwestern border. Handle with the external enemies and the mighty rebellious nobles in the state will be crucial for the survival of the imperial crown of Tarnovo. Now is the time to regain lost power and to fulfill the destiny of Bulgaria-to control Southeastern Europe. Now is the time for Total War!

Tarnovo
Made capital of the Bulgarian Empire by Asen I (1189–1196) Tarnovo grew quickly to become the strongest Bulgarian fortification of the Middle Ages between the 12th and 14th century and the most important political, economic, cultural and religious centre of the empire. In the 14th century as the Byzantine Empire weakened, Tarnovo claimed to be the Third Rome based on its preeminent cultural influence in the Balkans and the Slavic Orthodox world.
As the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Tarnovo is a quasi-cosmopolitan city, with many foreign merchants and envoys. Tarnovo has Armenian, Jewish and Roman Catholic ("Frankish") merchant quarters.

(The House of Kantakouzenoi Vs. The Imperial Regency of the Roman Empire)
After the sack of Constantinople in 1204, the Roman Empire has followed a steady decline. Although the Imperial forces recaptured the Capital in 1261, the time for the demise has already began. The Emperors trying to impose their rule in Europe, have left their lands in Asia Minor to the mercy of the Turks. As a result, one city after another has fallen to the hands of the barbarians leaving only a handful of coastal settlements under the rule of the Romans and excluding them from their main training pool in Anatolia. Furthermore, the “Vasileia ton Romaion” is shaken by civil wars between the nobles, between the Enotikoi (who want a union with the Pope) and the Anthenotikoi (who don’t) and between the monks (on religious matters such as “Esychasmos”). But the worse is yet to come:
In the present, the Empire is being crippled by one of the most devastating civil wars the Romans have ever known. All started 4 years ago, when the Emperor Andronikos III passed away in the age of 45, leaving his heir, John Palaiologos, too young to rule. After that, two Regencies were formed: The first one, by the very close friend of the deceased Emperor and "Commander-in-chief of the Imperial Armed Forces" John Kantakouzenos (who had persistently denied the rank of co-Emperor when the Vasileus was alive), and the other one, by the Empress-mother Anna of Savoy, the Patriarch Kalekas and the Lord High Admiral Alexios Apokaukos (who later proclaimed himself “Prime Minister” and Eparch of Constantinople).
Now, four years later and after many battles, Kantakouzenos controls all the Empire’s regions in Epirus, Peloponnesos, Thessaly, Macedonia and half of Thrace. The Regents control only a few Aegean islands, some regions in Asia Minor and the remaining lands of Thrace.
Unfortunately, the situation is far more complex than this: The neighbors of the Empire have joined the war to fulfill their own plans and ambitions….The Serbians and the Bulgarians have allied with the regency and are attacking Kantakouzenos’ lands in northern Greece, and the old personal friends of Kantakouzenos: the leaders of “Aydin” and the “Ottomans” are harassing the eastern parts of the Empire.
This war must be stopped quickly at all costs, if the Empire is to survive and get her old glory and power back!!
THE CIVIL WAR
Each of the two factions must fullfill certain requirements so that the Empire can be restored again.
The "House of Kantakouzenoi" which has aquired the majority of the settlements in Macedonia and Thrace must, firstly, conquer the remaining cities in Thrace and, if necessary, also storm the Palace of Vlachernai where the Regency resides by capturing the Outer City of Constantinople.
The "Imperial Regency of the Roman Empire", on the other hand, must recapture all the lost cities in Thrace and Macedonia and kill, if the former actions aren't enough, the faction leader of the enemy faction - The Grand Domestikos John Kantakouzenos.
At the start of the campaign, the current situation and objectives will be presented to the player (wip text).
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
If everything goes as planned...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Finally, if every single requirement is met, yes/no question will pop up. The player can choose whether or not to restore the Empire. If he doesnt, he will continue to play with his current faction.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Suppose the player decides to restore the Empire...The banner of the current faction (Kantakouzin or Regency depending on which faction ) will change, the COA will change...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
But most importantly, the Regency faction leader model will change. For this occasion the model of the faction leader changed at the beginning of the next turn, but in a real game, the model of the leader will change once he is in Constantinople and crowned as Emperor.

COAT OF ARMS AND FLAGS
About the Byzantine flags
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
(WARNING!!!!: The flags and the coa in the pics of the map aren't the final. For the preview ONLY, Kantakouzenos' flags are the simple cross and Regency's flags are the cross with the 4Bs)
There is much controversy in the flags and the symbols the Byzantines used. So we need to clarify them.
Firsty, here is the international flag identification system that we will use:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
with red are the flags that we will use in the game
So, for each faction we have:
1) Basileia ton Rhomaion (Roman Empire)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
a) from ca. 1445 door of St. Peter Basilica (depicts a byz. galley bringing John VIII to Italy)
b) from 1320/1 map for the Empire of Trebizond
c) from ca. 1390
d) from 14th c. "Conoscimiento de todos los reignos"
e) from 13th c. edition of Villehardouin's "La Conquete (conquest) de Constantinople"
f) from the Moravian fresco of the siege of Constantinople
a) Coat of Arms:
The arms of the Empire is a mixture of:
1) the Palaiologoi family arms (golden cross with red background) before they ascend to the throne and
2) the arms of the empire which is a cross with four firesteels (pyrekvola) which is an old Byzantine/Orthodox symbol and should NOT be connected to the Palaiologos. Its roots are from the labarum of Constantine. There are several ways to represent the brightness of the Cross: the first is with diagonal rays, the second is with the Greek letters “IC-XC-NI-KA” (Jesus Christ Wins) and the third is with the four firesteels.
“Flag of the Palaiologos dynasty with the imperial coat of arms (1259-1453). The initials were added to the family's original Arms after the ascent of Michael VIII Palaiologos to the imperial throne” (From Wikipedia)
It was used also as a flag (e.g. for the navy) but we want variety (and also, otherwise it would create a confusion with the symbols of the regency), so it’s best to use as a state flag the one with the St. Georges cross also…
b)State Flag:
In the final centuries of its existence, the Roman Empire used as a "state flag", either the flag with the tetragrammatic cross (shown in c & e) or the flag featuring the Tetragrammatic Cross (Coat of Arms of the Empire) and the Cross of Saint George. The second appeared in the Spanish Atlas “Conoscimento des todos los reinos” in c.1350 as the flag of the “Empire of Constantinople” (shown in d)
“The banners with the 4Bs were based on the 2nd title of the Emperor and they meant that everything that was under those flags (ambassadors, cities, ships) was “property” of the Vasileus himself and should be treated with respect” (From Anthonius II). “The political flag that meant that a city, land or a ship is property of the Roman Emperor (basileus ton romaion) was that with the four Bs.” (From Anthonius II).
Because we will use the picture of the tetragrammatic cross as the CoA, thus the state flag will be the "quartered" one.
c) War Flag: Perhaps (not for sure...) we will use the XP war flag....because it's one of the most recognisable symbols of the Empire and also we want to have a little diversity between the many flags and symbols of the byzantine factions....
“The 1st type of flags was the (military) banner/flag of the Empire that had only the Christ’s insignia known as Labarum... That flag NEVER changed because of the Romans' belief that the insignia was given to Emperor Constantine the Great by a miracle. The banner meant actually that the empire was "property" of the God himself.”
“Labarum: sacred military standard of the Christian Roman Emperors, firstly used by Constantine I in the early part of the 4th century AD…”
“…In later banners the monogram was sometimes embroidered on the cloth…”
Plus, it's one of the most favourite symbol of the Byzies' fans
d) War Ensign:
It is recorded by Psedo-Kodinos as the “Imperial Flamouron (=leaf-like of flame-like: from its shape)” as being hoisted on imperial naval vessels/warships and depicted in the Spanish Atlas “Conoscimento des todos los reinos” in c.1350.
This is how it's gonna look in the game (don't laught at the "quality" of the photoshoping...it's just shown how it will be) :
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
2) House of Kantakouzenoi
a) Coat of Arms:
The Coat of Arms of the House found in Greece is described as "Gules, a double-headed eagle displayed crowned, Or". But because Kantakouzenos didn't crown himself co-Emperor until 1346, after our mod starts, the Kantakouzenos Arms won't have the crowns.
b)State Flag:
John Kantakouzenos captured and freed every city in the name of the junior Emperor "John V Palaiologos". Thus every city of the Kantakouzenos' lands belonged to the Emperor and so HIS flag (the state flag of the empire) would fly above every city. Also, with this flag there won't be a problem with the "Kalmar Union" script where the flags of the cities cannot change....
c) War Flag:
The Coat of Arms of Kantakouzenos was also his private banne in battle. Of course in battle, he and his troops would march under the banner of the empire but for game reasons we choose Kantakouzenos' CoA
d) War Ensign:
As the Imperial Navy was under the leadership of Alexios Apokaukos of the Regency (who, among other titles, he possessed the office of "Megas Doux" -the commander-in-chief of the Imperial Navy ), Kantakouzenos was left without naval forces.
This is how it's gonna look in the game:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
3) Imperial Regency of the Roman Empire
a) Coat of Arms:
The Regents would of course use the CoA of the Empire but for gameplay reasons and in order to have more diversity of flags in the game we will use the simple CoA of the Palaiologoi before they ascend to the throne.
b)State Flag:
The Regents captured and freed every city in the name of the junior Emperor "John V Palaiologos". Thus every city of the Regency's lands belonged to the Emperor and so HIS flag (the state flag of the empire) would fly above every city. Also, with this flag there won't be a problem with the "Kalmar Union" script where the flags of the cities cannot change....
c) War Flag:
Of course in battle, the Regents and their troops would march under the banner of the empire but for game reasons we choose Regents' CoA
d) War Ensign:
For gameplay reasons we choose for the flag of the navy the modified war ensign of the Empire.

Since the 12th century, Serbia, under the Nemanyich dynasty, has been constantly making progress in all fields. The golden age of the Kingdom starts under the rule of King Stefan Urosh II Milutin and peaks in time of his grandson Stefan Urosh IV Dushan.
Because of lucky circumstances and the abdication of his brother Dragutin, Milutin becomes one of the greatest kings in Nemanyich dynasty. He manages to unite the strong vlastela (high nobles), who gain so much power that they are only satified with grand campaigns of conquest. He also sets the future direction of the Serbian state. The weakened Byzantine Empire is the ideal target for the strong, well commanded Serbian Army. He brings merchants and miners into his Kingdom and opens new mines. With this progress, Serbia not only grows financially, but it is able to recruit foreign mercenaries, who later became common to all future Serbian rulers. But, the wedding with Byzantine princess Simonis stops the expansion of Serbia and creates problems with vlastela, who are eager for plunder and conquest.
After Milutin, one of the unluckiest rulers of Serbia, King Stefan Dechanski, takes the throne. Half blinded by his father and exiled, he manages to come back to Serbia, take the crown, and defeat the Bulgarians in battle of Velbazhd. Because of his peaceful leading of Serbia and because he does not take any advantage from his victory over Bulgarians, his son, Stefan Urosh IV Dushan, supported by vlastela, rebels against him. In the end, Stefan Dechanski is imprisoned by his son Dushan in the castle Zvechan. Finally, Dushan takes the crown from his father and becomes the new King of Serbia.
Dushan ascends to the throne of a unified, strong, powerful state, full of vlastela who are eager for new territories and victories. He is forced by the vlastela to head south towards Byzantine Empire. Luck is on his side however, as the Byzantine Empire is involved in a civil war. He is able to expand his territories toward Epirus and Thessaly. During this expansion of Serbia, he switches sides between the two Byzantine factions, and with their help he easily advances. The one great threat to his realm comes not from Bulgarian Empire, which has good relations with Serbia because of Dushan's wedding with Emperor's sister Helena, but from Hungary and its young king Charles Robert.
Now in year 1345, he is one step away from conquering the grand city of Serrhai and from proclaiming himself as Tsar (Emperor), equalizing himself with Emperor in Konstantinoupolis. He is now making new plans and strategy, so that Total War can begin!

GENERALS' STRAT MODELS
Serbia's Generals' Strat Models
for clarifications look in "Feudal and Religion System" content box below.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
FEUDAL AND RELIGION SYSTEM
Once a general is trained or adopted, he will be just a nobleman of the court with no specific trait and bonuses. He will be dressed as simple courtier without any armour.
Example:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Picture 1: from left to right: Vojinovic nobleman, serbian captain, serbian courtier.
Now, you will have to decide what to do with a general.
1) You might send him to a village on the map to collect taxes, or appoint him as a governor of a major city (settlement). In other words, the general in question will become some sort of king's emissary. If this is the case, he will use the same lvl. 0 model, but will gain some economic and financial bonuses.
2) If you send him near a monastery, he will become a Cleric general.
3) If the player sends him out of a settlement with an army, he will become a normal military general.
These 3 basic classes of generals will have 3 sub-classes.
For example, the cleric general one day might become a theologian, or an academic, the military general might become high ranking nobleman with his own lands, army, and fiefs, etc.
Feudal system
The feudal system and lords will be available for almost every western faction, but obviously not for Byzantine factions. Their system of administration was somewhat different and because of that player will not gain those titles by leaving smaller nobles next to castles and in specific regions.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
1. These are the normal "court" generals. Actually, the one on the right is the faction heir. The one on the left is a normal general.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
2. If we leave a normal court general out of settlements for a long period of time, or we decide to fight an enemy army, the "court" general will become a "war" general.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
3. Now we will send him next to a fort on a strat map, and we will leave him there for a couple of turns.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
4. On this picture you can notice that he received a "Military career" trait.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
5. After a couple of turns, the model of the general changed again.
For this occasion, I simplified the script, so the general was sitting there next to that specific fort (that for was actually the fort of the Vojinovic family) for a couple of turns and did nothing. In a real game, the player will have to meet a lot of conditions to produce a "custom" land lord like this one. This general is now a "supporter" of a noble house, you can see that trait in the character scroll.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
6. But this general is not yet a Vlastelin (Nobleman). He will have to meet other requirments (fight other armies in this specific region, collect taxes, and do other "favors" for the noble house in question) until he becomes a nobleman.
So we have 3 different subclasses:
I Supporter
II Member
III Nobleman
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Once the general reaches the last level, he will become a Nobleman, with his own title. It will be an unique title (one title on the whole map) and his son will have the rights to that title by birth (once he receives the title, you cant give it to another general).
Clerics
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
1. Here we have a normal serbian general (its not a faction leader), in a serbian region full of orthodox monasteries.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
2. Now, if we move this general near (or we send him directly to) those monasteries, and leave him there for a couple of turns...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
3. He will become a cleric general, with his own specific model and with specific bonuses and traits (here again we will have 3 levels of cleric generals: Academic, Theologian, Living saint).
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Choosing your religion
In this section we will show you another new concept we implemented. In TTW you will be able to choose the religion that your faction leader (king, emperor) embraced, not necessarily by conviction, but for pragmatic reasons. For example, as an orthodox christian, the first crowned king of Serbia, Stefan, had very good relations with Pope, because he was in a struggle with the Byzantines for an independent serbian state and crown. Different bosnian bans were by conviction Bogumils, but they often declared themselves (again for political reasons) as catholic. We, in TTW, managed to implement that kind of medieval politics.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
1. Here we have the serbian faction leader (mind his anglo-saxon name ), chilling in the mountains.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
2. And this are his traits...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
3. Now...if we send our king to that orthodox monastery standing there in the valley...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
4. And we leave him there for a turn...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
He will get a new ancillary and trait. You can also notice that his piety got a major boost (+5), but those are only temporary "side" bonuses. The real thing are the global bonuses. If the character declares himself catholic, and the people in that country are orthodox, the player will face some negative bonuses in settlements. On the other hand, he will improve standings with other factions, or maybe change state religion.
5. If we send him to a catholic monastery or church (the nearest is the one from Bar on the coast)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
6. And we leave him there for 1 turn...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
7. He will embrace the catholic faith, and teachings.

"At first we were confused. The East thought that we were West, while the West considered us to be East. Some of us misunderstood our place in the clash of currents, so they cried that we belong to neither side- and others that we belong exclusively to one side or the other. But I tell you, Irenaeus, we are doomed by fate to be the East in the West and the West in the East, to acknowledge only heavenly Jerusalem beyond us, and here on earth--no one." - St. Sava (of Serbia) to Irenaeus, 13th century

unfortunatelly yes....the grass texture of the settlement models cannot change because it's a part of the model itself.....but i don't think that this is a major drawback...
