    A university in the US state of Utah has suspended a star basketball player for having pre-marital sex with his girlfriend in violation of the school's strict "honour code".


    The BYU honour code requires students to be "chaste and virtuous".

    The Utah-based university is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. All students agree to abide by the honour code, which reflects Mormon values.


    The code includes prohibitions on drinking, smoking, drugs, tea, coffee, swearing and sex, as well as a commitment regularly to attend church.
    Personally I think this is a bit ridiculous, but then, he went there knowing the rules, that it was Mormon-influenced, and agreed to it.

    It was a Mormon-run university in the State of Mormon (aka Utah). I'm surprised he was even allowed to have a girlfriend.

    That said, I think religious groups are kidding themselves if they think they can regulate the behaviour of university aged kids...

    This wasn't even regulation, it was pure retribution. And it hurt EVERYONE, a brilliant young basketball player, a team which immediately suffered from losing him, and a school which is now an embarrassment.

    If it's school rules it's school rules. By being a member of the team/student at the university he accepted those rules and pledged to follow them, or else be punished for it.

    Its not like you can go to BYU and not notice what is is and what you agree too, it is what it is. Its not like BYU can keep the anyone from going somewhere else or getting some other university to pick him up. To be fair I had a friend who painted a slightly different story she got bounced from BYU because her transgression was a bit hard to hide at 6 months, but the athlete on the other end managed to talk his way out of the issue (so it not like BYU does not suffer from the same greed factor that operates in a lot big time college sports). In any case the fact remains even though my friend was bitter she got a fair chunk of her scholarships transferred to ISU, and got federal grants etc. So its not like Big Bad BYU is preventing education - it is after all a private institution and thus should be allowed to establish its own codes.
