    Default Odd Error When Adding a New Faction

    Hello, sorry if this is the wrong place but I could see no better forum to put it in.

    I was adding a new faction to Stainless Steel 6.4 (I'll be doing a 6.3 version later). When I start up 6.4 select the faction in the campaign start screen, it gets to the end of the loading bar then crashes with no error message. But I get this in system.log.txt:

    Insufficient Video Memory to load required texture set. (Maybe slightly different spelling.)

    Any thoughts on what could cause this?

    I've attached the files, which should go in SS6.3/data/campaign/

    Here's a vague thought: Strat models...

    Hopefully someone else can fill in the gaps

    Yes that's the one for it.
    Check the .cas models used for the new faction. Open those .cas files with notepad and at the bottom you will see a file name that is your default textures so make sure it is in the right location otherwise without it you get the Insufficient Video Memory error.

    Even better: run your log in trace mode. That way the line above the error will show the model and the texture that is missing.

    That sounds good, do I just add some kind of "flag" to the .exe?

    In the CFG file (opens with Notepad) of your mod make sure the log part reads like this:

    [log]
    level = * trace

    Meanwhile you are at it also submit the log file here as an attachment in a .zip file so that we can have a look.

    I tried adding the diplomat, merchant, spy, and assassin tgas but still nothing. As requested I've attached the system.log.txt.

    Does the marked tga file exist?

    Is it of 0 bytes? coz you need 2 types one a dummy file that will be southern_ambasador_florence.tga.dds of 0 bytes other one will be the actual file that is southern_ambasador_florence.tga.

    upload the file and we can check, probably a format error.

    @Ishan
    you don't need both versions, just tga is fine.

    This might have to do with the following:
    Every CAS model is assigned a default texture, let's say custom_spy_england.tga
    If you now don't have england in your faction roster you obviously will not list that file in the descr_model_strat nor include that file in your mod.
    And that will give you the above error. Simply because the model requires the default file to be present irrespective whether it is used or not.

    Edit the .cas in notepad++. It will have a readable string defining the .tga on the bottom line.

    I should have put 'open' instead of 'edit' if that helps. I've no idea if the file can be edited successfully this way but at least you can see if your filename is correct.

    And here I was hoping... (tried myself in my noob days to edit the CAS file like that).
    But you are right, it is right at the bottom, best to find with wordwrap on.

    Yes they are 0kb and the .dds files are much larger, but I've just noticed lines in system.log.txt like this:

    17:59:12.260 [system.io] [info] open: found data/models_strat/textures/southern_ambasador_venice.tga.dds (from: packs/data_1.pack)

    I think it's fetching the textures from vanilla, so I'll have to get the pack file manager and get some textures out of that pack to use.

    Thank you all so much for helping me (+rep to everyone).

    Read my tutorial to specific unpack files.
    The tool for unpacking doesn't works it extracts corrupt files.
