Default Is King Kong a Racist Movie?

Film critics and others have long noted the racist overtones of the 1933 and 1976 versions of King Kong. As director Peter Jackson's most recent take on the great ape wraps up its first week in movie theaters, Karen Grigsby Bates examines the racial overtones common to all of the Kong films.

lol people overreact. You find this kind of BS in the Tribune as well, and thats the big business conservative paper.

Basically with editorials and some journalists if you dont let them post this they will say your paper is "rascist".

I never understood what the big deal was about "big monster" type movies like Godzilla, King Kong, The Blob, Antz...or whatever. Theyre all total crap. Ahh! a big monkey! Who cares? Ahh! a big lizard! Who cares? Imo rarely can a director pull off a truly good horror movie...and the secret is not giant monkies or lizards or ants...

King Kong is not supposed to be a horror movie.

Anyway, I really didn't see anything racist about this, I mean, it is a remake, and if there is any racism it is because it was intended by the creator of the original, and not because of anyone involved in Peter Jackson's version

If anything it is racist towards the aboriginal/pacific islaner natives.

of course its the liberal's fault
    What is?

Hey have any of you ever seen Son Of Kong. Its the sequal with the orginal cast who return to the island only to find Kongs son there. And guess what? Hes white.

I also loved the part where the guy claims its racist because they didnt use black natives this time because if they did they would be accused of racism. Go figure. You cant win.

Thats not the point...the point is that this "monster" movie thing is almost a genre of its own now...and its based on horribly crappy movies! Stuff like...Jaws, Anaconda, Bats, Tremors...etc. its always the same premise...group of people hunted by somrthing thats higher on the foodchain...bloodthirst and carnage ensues...hollywood milks us like the sheep we are. Wait, do sheep get milked? Ok goats then, we're goats.

Ok but APPARENTLY this new King Kong movie has less to do with monsters killing people and more to do with...I dunno, something with more substance, personally I havn't seen the new king kong yet so I dunno. But GENERALLY this genre dissapoints me greatly.

As for Racism....Mmmm...dont really care. So what if some producer chooses to put his racist agenda in his movie? The people who get offended will make a big stink, the directors name will be muddied forever and justice is done. Free speech and all that...

if you havnt seen this movie yet, then i suggest you go out and do it before u start critisizing it.

and about the whole racism thing, i havnt noticed any racial discrimination in this movie. well none that was enough to anger its viewers. sure black people look like a flat nosed gorilla, you cant complain about things that are true.

The old Tarzan and King Kong movies were pretty racist. Of course, they were made in an era so pervasively racist that many famous Americans supported Adolf Hitler (see Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh). I haven't seen the new King Kong movie yet so I won't comment on its racism or lack thereof for now. Hearing that it was 3 hours long was enough for me to declare that it could wait for rental.

I'd say that Tarzan is much more inherently racist than King Kong. You could theoretically remove racist overtones from King Kong if you tried (although I don't know whether Peter Jackson has done this), but the whole story of Tarzan is inherently racist unless you very heavily alter it. The idea that he lived his whole life in the vicinity of black women and never developed sexual urges until a white woman came along is pretty racist.

I will have some fun with this thread ...

Tarzan didn't live with, or anywhere near black people. He grew up with the apes. The first humans he had any contact with were the black natives (all male), who killed his "ape mother". He did have a "crush" on a young female ape, but realised it could never be ... he was too ugly for her.

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 27 books starring his least favorite character, Tarzan. Tarzan's first contact with white people was with a Frenchman, who taught him his own language. For the rest of his life, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan) spoke English with a slight French accent. When he wasn't living on the family estate in England, he lived in a nice bungalow in Africa ... on the ground, by the way ... with his wife, Jane (who was an American). Here, according to Burroughs, he lived close to the noblest people that Tarzan had ever known - the Waziri. And yes, they were black.

I would say that Tarzan ... in the 27 books featuring him (and I read all of them, when I was a boy) ... killed more Germans than anyone else.

Would that I could strip off this thin veneer of civilisation and take to the trees, and freedom.

My reading of these books did cause one problem for me, however. I learned how to spell from the Tarzan books. And Burroughs was thoroughly British ...

Dude...the movie is racist towards giant gorillas, dinosaurs and big insects.

It can't be racist towards humans. Humans had the final laugh. Get over it.

Actually, Lord of the Rings is obscenely racist. We have Orcs being depicted as a separate sub-race (well...they are) and being defeated, drowned, burnt etc. And dude, Dwarfs being depicted as a comedy side show? Intolerable!!!

ARAGAHGAHGAH!! And elves being so beautiful!!!
