Default Dumbest thing you've ever done in this game?

i just fought an amazing battle as sparta against athenians and other allied greeks. both sides had around 3,500 troops and it was on an open, grassy plain. anyway, i stacked my left wing with spartan hoplites and demolished the enemy's right while my right wing halted the athenians to buy time for my advancing spartans. i outflanked them despite some losses on the right, earing 2,700 kills while only losing 1,300 soldiers. might not seem like much to an experienced player but i just downloaded the mod

i then felt compelled to save, but loaded a previous file instead. there goes the last 20 minutes of my life haha. oh well.

    anyway, what's yours?

Too many to count. Nearly re-recuiting legions, horrible stuff ups in battle, foolhardy campaigns, with insufficient troops who all die anyway. Auto-resolving battles with budding general , who get the poor battlefield tactician general trait, and occassionally coward epithet, though no trait oddly, because they couldn't defeat 2 units of levy pikemen with half a legion.

Yeah I've wasted so many troops and resources trying to hold on to Emporiae. Thinking of just abandoning it until I am through with Carthage at least.
“Plunderers of the world, after they, laying everything waste, run out of land, they probe even the sea: if their enemy has wealth, they have greed; if he be poor, they are ambitious; neither East nor West has sated them; alone of mankind they covet poverty with the same passion as wealth. Robbery, butchery, rape they misname empire: they make a wasteland and call it peace” Tacitus

Attacking macedon after I defeated the free greeks with Sparta. To clarify things I only had hoplite armies and simply after each battle my troops were pretty decimated after facing those phalangite armies. The reason why I used hoplites armies, I just preferred the fighting style and wanted to stay loyal to the classical way to wage wars in Greece. Just like in the end of the last Samurai did I feel that millitary progress is more important than staying with
    ancient tradition.
Once I had also started to use Spartan Phalangite armies I was able to hold them for a full 40 turns. I managed to defeat stack after stack but my economy couldnt manage to replenish and hold the front. At the end I ended up only having Crete, and I was completly disgusted that I havent touched this mod for 2 months. (By all means not saying the campaign should be easier, next time I will plan better before I wager war with every neighbour )

I will try in the near futur another campaign. I had some really great moments playing this, especially once I conquered Athens.

This mod is not for samurais
I needed three wars to defeat the macedons, with my free greeks. And my armies weren't traditional. I rarely use hoplites. I use sarmatian and cappadocian cavalry, phalangites, levy pikemen, barbarian swordsmen, etc.

I defeated Pergamon with one war though, with series of masterful manoveurs

Greatest stupiditzy I did: I thought I dont need to build a strong navy

Auto-res a battle with a full early-pratorian legion against a full scythian army.

lol, the little color bar said it was 4:2 in mah favor and still, I gots a crushing defeat, with the early praetorians and my successor vanishing into hades.

too many times I've done the same thing (4:2, 3:2 but always clearly in my favor) only to go "WTF?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!"

But on the flip side I've fought 2:4 battles and got a Heroic Victory out of it.

Yesterday, playing as Sythia, I was encroaching on Roman territory (One turn) and they sent wave after wave of half stacked, inexperienced, troops against my quarter to half stacked veteran armies (I was pulling units from any city I could) and won every auto-resolve. Seriously, at every turn I getting into about 5 to 10 battles and just auto-resolved as fast as I could grinning like a maniac the whole time

    "THAT ALL YOU GOT?"

Splitting my forces in the initial Hannibal Trasimene battle. Was an ambush but I thought i could get my main force to the top of a hill before Hannibal closed in, only about 6 units made it, the rest were...sacrificed. What a poor decision. Never been so badly annihilated in a battle. Casualties were prolly a 10:1 ratio in his favor. Thank god for Aristotle's guide to the first 10 Roman turns, or I'd have never retreated troops from Spain and Dyrrachium.

ps. Also had a large naval mishap in my attempts to punish the African loving Macedonians, that damn super-ship(dreadnaught?) the Macedonians start the game with has destroyed a good 20 Roman ships including 1 navy that had a full stack and a middle son of my leader. I still havent defeated that ship in battle, its been hanging out in the northern Adriatic defending the Patavium port for the Boii's. Which isnt too bright since im blockading Pella.

After having established a strong naval presence in the central Mediterranean as Rome, I planned a naval landing on Crete. I had long ignored Crete, and my intent was taking down Crete and then Rhodes. Rhodes would give me a secure base of operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. After having just returned from a nasty but victorious campaign against Dacia and just being replenished around Pella, I designated my elite Legio IV Flavia Felix for the invasion.

I had them board a small flotilla of Biremes (yes, Biremes). No problem, a short trip only from Greece to Crete and I employed my battle fleets further East, clearing away enemy fleets.

But after 3/4 of the way to Crete, a Greek fleet with superior ships intercepted them and sank them.

I lost an entire elite Legion before even seeing enemy shores. And it took a few more years to redivert Legio III Gallica from finishing off Sarmatia to travel all the way down to Greece and safely and properly invade Crete.

Legio IV's loss was big. Not only as a veteran Legion, but someway, somehow, they were my first fully filled out Imperial Legion, first with the Lorica Segmentata. They were filled out even before my Praetorian Legion, and because of this I sent them in practically all compass directions to deal with the nastiest fights. I had older Imperial Legions put together (Legio III Gallica, XI Claudia Pia Fidelis... XI is another favorite with alot of luck), but due to the urgency of my campaigns elsewhere, never had the time to be assembled with the proper balance of units that I wanted every Legion to deploy with. IV was the first and sent them to fronts that were in a terrible state.

I was pissed! Everyone on Crete was put to the sword after being crushed, along with every Greek settlement I conquered afterwards

Fighting Hannibal at the beggining of the mod (had reinforced that starting army with more cavalry and soldiers, full stack) this is what happened:

    1. Engaged his soldiers in melee, and started to close around the edges outflanking them with infantry.
    2. Sent my cavalry round to destroy his cavalry (it was about 3:1 in my favour in terms of number of horse)
    3. Started watching the epic fighting of his celts and iberians v my legionarries, and forgot about my horse.
    4. Realised my line was too thin so i zoomed out and found out my horse had been completely destroyed (ratio now about 6:1 in his favour!!! )
    5. Sent my bodyguard round to stem the flow of enemy cavalry around my flank, all died except general, which i then sent into the middle of my troops so he wouldnt die
    6. Got attacked in teh rear by his cavalry, and as my lines were so thin in teh middle because of my efforts to outflank him, they cut a hole right through the middle of my army.
7: Basically my whole army got destroyed...and that crap general died too...

Any more people got absolutely smashed by Hannibal?? haha

In 600 AUC, playing the Romans, I decided to send a legion in the East to destroy Parthia. I thought it would be quite easy, Parthia only had one region left, the rebel one in Arabia, and the Seleucid were looking strong, with all their initial territories retained. My idea was just to build a base there to be able to help the Seleucids if they needed it (because I want to fight them in late campaign).

When my ship finally arrived, I had a "nice" surprise. Egypt, Armenia and Parthia had ganged up against the Seleucid and took about 5-6 of their territories. I am now giving away 50000 bucks to the Seleucids each turn to support them, while I am involved in a deadly war with Macedon. My poor legion is now stuck in the Arabian desert, trying to capture a settlement in the middle of a renewed Parthian horde, with no reinforcement in sight for years.

I should have made that move long time ago when it was easy, or sent much more troops ...

    As Romans.

My national leader and three strongest generals invade Carthage. We take Carthago, Thapsus, Hadwhateveritscalled. I then bring over three inexperienced young generals from Sicily and do a recon with them marching far out into Hippo Regius. No Carthaginians.

So I turn them around, put the young inexperienced generals into the newly conquered cities and send out my national leader and three strongest generals out to take Hippo Regius and shore up the new front line there.

I press turn and - oh no! - EIGHT FULL stacks of elite Carthaginians have magically appeared.

Cue much mourning in Rome as my legions get wiped out (one made it back without a general and about a third of its troops) and some nervous young chaps in the conquered cities. Luckily they never tried to take back their cities but they are still there surrounding Hippo Regius so Africa has ground to a halt and the battle moves to Iberia.

On my encounters with the spawn stacks I lost Claudius Marcellus (this was very early on, barely after the rebellion) and his legion. So I bailed, demolished half of carthages buildings, let it rebel and invaded Spain instead. 50 years later, I still occasionally fought them same stacks. JUST WITH MY 10-STAR UBER-GENERAL AND HIS SILVER WEAPONS AND ARMOURED STACK WITH SILVER EXPERIENCE.
