EB (and general RTW) Campaign Map Lag

System specs: Windows 7 64-bit, Quad Core i5 @2.67Ghz, 8Gb DDR3 @1333, GTX 460 1Gb, latest nvidia drivers, playing at 1920x1080.

Game runs well, except during loading screens and campaign map, when moving the camera with the mouse, clicking the minimap, and opening settlement panels. In those cases, fps drops to 5 or less, completely ruining the whole game experience, since managing many armies in different regions becomes near impossible due to the lag (the game freezes for about 10 seconds every time I click the minimap, or select a diplomat/spy/whatever from a list).

I've tried lowering settings and resolution, reinstalling the mod and game, using xp compatibility and setting single core affinity, and still nothing. This happens to any/all RTW mods, including vanilla, BI and ALX. However, if I reinstall my graphics drivers and then enter the game, it runs flawlessly, as it should. But as soon as I restart the PC, it goes back to massive campaign map lag. I'm guessing it's some sort of memory dump issue between the game and the video card.

I really don't want to install drivers every time I play this game. Please help.

After reading your report my first advise would be to uninstall your graphics drivers completely (use the Software panel from Windows, not the built in Uninstallers), restart the PC and install the newest version, restart.

Maybe traces from previous versions are left over on the HD and are loaded by the system after a reboot.

Besides that, RTW is in no way compatible to the newest hardware, the benefits its offers won't be used by RTW.

Same result. Game runs great after reinstalling everything, but at the next reboot, it goes back to lagging. I don't understand how this can be. It obviously works, but only right after the drivers' reinstall. Could it be the Windows or the GPU? Again, I'm running a GTX460 1Gb on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate.

I'm currently running with 266.85 with no problems, so it is clearly something on your system. Do other games suffer similar problems?

Try to play with the compatibility settings of RomeTW.exe, enable/disable the options for Visual Designs and scaling. Run it with admin-rights.
Double check if the graphic drivers are resetted by Windows after a reboot (you can use the nvidia settings dialog from the desktop and then go Help-->Information to get the version number).
Did you change any settings inside the nvidia control panel?

Sorry for the late reply, haven't had time to mess around with the PC lately. I used Driver Sweeper to make sure the drivers were completely removed, then reinstalled the 266.85 ones and the lag is still there.

I have no damn idea what is the cause of this, so here's my dxdiag, in case it might help:

The installer is running with admin-rights, yes?

As this affects vanilla too, IMO you should post this on the main bug/tech-help forum, there is a good chance that other players with similar hardware builds have also problems liek the one you described.
You could also get a support ticket from nvidia as it points out that this is clearly a driver issue.

Thanks for the log anyway, but I don't find any suspicious in it.
