Question regarding TW games

I have played Rome and Expansions, Medieval and Medival 2 with expansions, and Empire.

I really wanted to like Empire but hated the naval combat so much I uninstalled it. Of all the games up to this point, I probably have played Medieval II the most. With the upcoming release of Shogun 2, which game would control wise/battle wise/experience wise, be closest to Shogun 2?

Perhaps I am truly missing the greatness that some people profess Empire to be, but honestly I couldn't get past the naval aspect of it to thoroughly enjoy it. Without searching everywhere, did they make great improvements that helped the game later on? Or would I be better served to stick with my classic Medieval 2 and Rome still?

Empire or Napoleon would be the closest. As they were built on the same engine as Shogun 2. It's really up to you though, since Shogun 2 is all about melee you could just go back to M2/Rome and brush up your skills.

And what didn't you like about naval battles?

I felt as if I was just going around in circles, waiting to shoot. It was slow, at the time is was choppy (new PC since) and it felt completely foreign to me.

I could do this, I just felt as if this is so integral to the game why do that. I mean, I don't have a problem auto-resolving some regular battles, especially ones where I have 4 or 5 times more troops than the AI and they are camping me just to be a nuisance. But perhaps I should give it a try again.

I would say it's an in-between of Napoleon and Medieval, featuring things from both those games with some tweaks and some new things (or they could be things from Shogun 1, I haven't played that game). Napoleon is basically what Empire should've been. My ETW is lying somewhere rotting, as it should be, but I'm enjoying NTW right now.

When you don´t like the naval aspect of Empire and NTW why not autoresolving them.
When the rest is enjoyable that would be the best solution I guess. The campaign game play as well as diplomacy and other things have been vastly improved from ETW onwards imho.

The combat might be very different in Shogun2. More similar to Medieval2 with Bows, Spears, Swords and all those Melee fights. And later in the campaign you can recruit gunpowder weapons. So the tactics and weapon types concerning Shogun and Medieval are the same.
