    First I want to thank all people involved in creating this MOD. Thank you!

    This is my first AAR. I am a AAR virgin. J Since this is my first time, please be gentle. Without bad, good has no meaning. I choose VH/VH, because I want bitter fight to the end. I do not have expectations of creating an empire. I just want Rome to survive. That is surviving at expense of other nations. J

    My house rules:







    I will adhere to LT1956’s house rules with exception’s below. I will update list as house rules are broken. J
    • I will allow the reinforcing of strategic areas with units from specific legion. I will keep track of these units and re-unite them with parent legion later. Since it is survival mode, campgruppe tactics will be used.
    • Bridge battles will be very much desired. I love them!
    • Town square battles will be allowed. I love street fighting!
    • Legion will consist of core units 3 Triarii and 5 Princepes. The rest of units will be used as situation dictates. Keep in mind that core units of legion might be detached and sent in support of other areas, but they will be eventually reunited with parent legion.
    I started playing without idea of creating AAR, so I did not take screenshots.


    History:

    1. Units from Messana transferred to Reghion. It will be taken by Greeks anyways.
    2. Beneventum was taken by Gaul with following casualties: 965 romans and 366 gauls, but two units of ranged units were transferred to Arretium.
    3. Some units from Legion V were lent to Arretium to defend against Gaul onslaught.
    4. Legion V with Vibius in charge fought battle with following casualties: 983 romans and 3822 Gauls.
    5. Legion VI with Flavius in charge fought urban battle in Beneventum against Carthage with following casualties: 337 romans and 4001 Carthage. Armored elephants never made it to front lines thanks to reinforcements of velites.
    6. Arretium will have mines that will help Rome to survive financially. The rest will have roads for military movements.
    7. Legion XXVIII with Quintus in charge is guarding Asculum.

    I will do my best to keep legions core units alive at expense of other units. After all, I have to wait five years to re-enforce core units of legion. Updating AAR is so much effort, not sure I can keep it up. J

    Rome is thriving financially. I am waiting for ability to recruit new legion in Capua. It will also give AI chance to build up. While waiting for Carthage to attack me with second stack in Italy, Greek did a sneak attack on Beneventum. Lucky for Rome Legion VI was waiting nearby for Theophanes to attack. Ships carrying Greek were spotted and Legion VI was recalled to Beneventum. The casualties of urban battle were 141 romans and 3237 Greek. Numbers look good but tragedy is legion had support units for Theophanies Carthage army. Most casualties were in irreplaceable core units of principles.

    Some centurion started rumor that Greek hoplites are famous for sexually violating prisoners. Everyone fought like hell. J Spartans proved to be real problem. They could only be dealt with slingers firing on the side and back. Cavalry did awesome job at delaying enemy archers and skirmishes and even routing some.

    Gauls attacked Arretium. Lucius was charge of defense. Heavy units consisting of two principles and two triarii from Vibius’ Legion V aided in defense. Battle will be recorded as minor because Parent legion was officially in Arminium. I think mistake was made by placing triarii as forward unit. Next time in battle with gauls, I will put townwatch or hastate in front. Irreplacible triarii took heavy casualties. In addition, they were highly experienced. They had three silver chevrons of experience. What a waste of good soldiers. Beneventum still waiting for Carthage to assault with Theophanes. Legion VI will wait for few turns. If carthage does not assault Beneventum, XXVIII Legion with Quintus will be transferred to Regium.

    Financially, Rome continues to prosper. Arretium with Lucius in charge is golden goose of Rome. Mining really paid off.

    VH / VH is not the toughest possible setting on the map. It tends to create problems rather than advantages for AI.

    I accept your dare. J I will abandoned my campaign and start new one and follow LT1956’s rules. After reading house rules, I have few questions about them.

    • If I have pre-marian republican legions do house rules violated when legion is recruited in Capua but takes numerical designation of different city?
    • How about recruiting or retraining cavalry, velites, and hastatii of acting legion prior to five years refitting.
    • Does legion has to be refitted in its home town?
    • After taking settlement, do all non-roman buildings are destroyed? For example, does market get destroyed as well?
    • Can I recruit hastatii and cavalry for city defense?
    • How about purchasing mercenaries for city defense?
    • Can non-legion city defense garrison to go after enemy that entered its province or only legions are allowed to do it?
    • Somewhere was mentioned legion should be formed with taking into account which enemy and nation it will be combating. It also mentioned the units that should be in the legion. So what does first sentence really mean?
    • If city has no walls can one station missile units in the city square and block streets?

    • Q1: If I have pre-marian republican legions do house rules violated when legion is recruited in Capua but takes numerical designation of different city? Well, since there is no way of tracking the legions at this point aside from using anciliaries, I wouldnt say it does violate them.
    • Q2: How about recruiting or retraining cavalry, velites, and hastatii of acting legion prior to five years refitting.// As far as I am concerned, it is fine to retrain those. House rules state that in the meantime, fill thinning ranks with auxilia
    • Q3: Does legion has to be refitted in its home town? // Believe so. You cannot retrain named legions anyplace else.
    • Q4: After taking settlement, do all non-roman buildings are destroyed? For example, does market get destroyed as well? // Everything that can be brought down. I personally demolish one at a time to avoid rebellions. But always demolish temples and such buildings with negative public order bonuses.
    • Q5: Can I recruit hastatii and cavalry for city defense? // Hastati are field troops so they should be used as such, same goes for cavalry. Use town watch and velites + slingers instead. Even these can do wonders (my town watch + few missiles slaughters entire Armored elephant unit)
    • Q6: How about purchasing mercenaries for city defense? // As per above
    • Q7: Can non-legion city defense garrison to go after enemy that entered its province or only legions are allowed to do it? // Any army can go kill enemy into their lands.
    • Q8: Somewhere was mentioned legion should be formed with taking into account which enemy and nation it will be combating. It also mentioned the units that should be in the legion. So what does first sentence really mean?// Its more of a legion composition regarding the roster. Means - fill the auxilia / missile / cavalry ranks based on whom you are going to face.
    • Q9: If city has no walls can one station missile units in the city square and block streets? // first defend the walls, then fall back slowly to the square. Do not camp it for obvious advantage.

    I always use script. I even had to postpone city siege because script requires one turn to be activated.

    Just ignore this thread. My eailier attemp at having a most challenge was completely misgided. After reading numerous threads, I restarted my campaign. I will post my progress in “Post your Empire, share your stories! [SPQR 8.0]” link. It is hard to find time to write AAR and play. My advice to new people of this mod is to give a try and follow LT1956 house rules. Just amuse yourself.

    AARs are too time consuming really. At some point, youd take forever to play a turn, and reading all the same AARs is boring.

    Well, at least my first time sex was more memorable then my experience with first AAR. LOL
