Default When at school were you ever taught some utterly ridiculous religious stupidity?

I remember being told to school assembly that if we were ever to take up smoking we would go to Hell, or something along those lines. The reasoning being if you smoke you could die of lung cancer so it would be yourself who who would be killing yourself. But only God is allowed to decide when you are going to die so he's going to be pissed if you do his job for him. But if God decides everything that's going to happen to everyone surely you smoking and dying of lung cancer would have been part of his plan to kill you off in the first place? It's not like you would be able to get one up on him.

Both male and female walruses have tusks and have been observed using these overgrown teeth to help pull themselves out of the water.

The mustached and long-tusked walrus is most often found near the Arctic Circle, lying on the ice with hundreds of companions. These marine mammals are extremely sociable, prone to loudly bellowing and snorting at one another, but are aggressive during mating season. With wrinkled brown and pink hides, walruses are distinguished by their long white tusks, grizzly whiskers, flat flipper, and bodies full of blubber.
Walruses use their iconic long tusks for a variety of reasons, each of which makes their lives in the Arctic a bit easier. They use them to haul their enormous bodies out of frigid waters, thus their "tooth-walking" label, and to break breathing holes into ice from below. Their tusks, which are found on both males and females, can extend to about three feet (one meter), and are, in fact, large canine teeth, which grow throughout their lives. Male walruses, or bulls, also employ their tusks aggressively to maintain territory and, during mating season, to protect their harems of females, or cows.
The walrus' other characteristic features are equally useful. As their favorite meals, particularly shellfish, are found near the dark ocean floor, walruses use their extremely sensitive whiskers, called mustacial vibrissae, as detection devices. Their blubbery bodies allow them to live comfortably in the Arctic region—walruses are capable of slowing their heartbeats in order to withstand the polar temperatures of the surrounding waters.
The two subspecies of walrus are divided geographically. Atlantic walruses inhabit coastal areas from northeastern Canada to Greenland, while Pacific walruses inhabit the northern seas off Russia and Alaska, migrating seasonally from their southern range in the Bering Sea—where they are found on the pack ice in winter—to the Chukchi Sea. Female Pacific walruses give birth to calves during the spring migration north.
Only Native Americans are currently allowed to hunt walruses, as the species' survival was threatened by past overhunting. Their tusks, oil, skin, and meat were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that the walrus was hunted to extinction in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Well, my sister's teacher in religion (a high school subject) was some crazy independent church dude, who spent his time making Jesus-techno. When they were studying Buddhism he basically told them that it was a stupid, inconsistent relgion and they would end up in hell if they were Buddhist.

Though he was the teacher for the classes following the 'Music, dance and drama' program, and there some 70 % of the students are Christian fundies eitherway, rock on!

I also have an experience of my own, though it's not really 'some utterly ridiculous religious stupidity', but when I started at school and first had the religion subject (usually just called 'Christianity' in grade school, when I went), I was sort of confused. I had basically never been exposed to religion earlier in my life, never been in a church, never heard of the Bible (or realized that I heard quotes from it). So after a few months I actually thought that the Bible was actually some guy and not a book (for a while I actually thought it was some bee character), and I was completely confused about the other stuff as well once I realized the Bible was a book, I thought Esau was some sort of red werewolf-like thing, among other stuff. Not to mention my teacher was a complete dolt and we mostly just sang songs.

In my first elementary school grade I was made to sing a song about being leprose because I had sinned.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Remind me a biology professor in my previous university (I was never in his classes before anyway), who was famous for opening his classes with "there is no God" statement and spent his first class lecturing students why creationism was wrong.

And my friends told me he always made several students cried in first class every semester for that approach.

That would make for an awkward class. Plus, that's rather rude.

That should be the way how teachers discuss, debunk myths

I don't think it is proper to waste time on that, especially whether God exists or not does not matter about the objectives of classes. However, consider even some of my own classes have to include one chapter to discuss about creationism (and that is university biology course), it is not surprised to me that professor would take such stance (probably with the bless of university, I don't know about that). Overall, we have to remember that this event happened in rural area of Midwest US, where a lot of students are grown up in devoted Christian family.

Being in a rural-area dominated by Christians may be the reason those students cried. It's a rare situation. You don't find an Atheist preacher in such areas.

And here lies what is predominant in modern teaching that answers the question admirably. My daughter goes to RE classes yet Christianity is the last subject to make remarks on if indeed allowed. Oh, apparently you can discuss any other religion or no religion but bring up Jesus and see how fast the subject changes.

I remember when I was younger, I was like 7, I had a conversation with my teacher. She said that the Virgin Mary was the only person to ever live without sin. I asked "What about Jesus?". She replied "Well, you have to remember that Jesus was only human". To which I replied, "Wasn't Jesus more human than Mary?".

    She quickly changed the subject.

Then, a few weeks ago, our, in fairness, insane religion teacher said that ghosts are real and that was fact

I was in a Jesuit school from age 6 to 18. S yes, I was "taught" some crap, but it was mostly the good side of religion aka help others and such, no biblical nonsense.

Really? I had the opposite experience..religious conservatives brainwashing us about how Marxists and Muslims were conspiring to ruin the "Christian Nation" of the U.S.A. On the other hand, a few years ago (Not in elementary school like the other one) I had an openly Marxist teacher. He tried to avoid bias, and was really successful at it. He would not mention Marxism unless it was mentioned by someone else, and he would only talk about his personal politics if you asked him outside of class. Of course, it was this teacher who was the target of hate by pissed off parents and the local Tea Party. Not the conservative ideologues that teach a USA centric view of history in which Ronald Reagan was chosen by god to destroy communism and Islam (He actually was responsible for the rise of some Islamist movements).
