    Default Faster game

Okay I just did a test to see if vanilla RTW ran slow with units 5,000+, like it does with ExRM and TIC. I did a battle with 12,000+ soldiers with all of the settings down, except soldier detail at medium, and it ran smooth, no lag at all. I haven't played RTR in a while so I went back to check if I wasn't just remembering my old computer and it was as expected. Only 8,000+ soldiers on screen and it was unplayable. What is it in RTR/ExRM that makes it lag so much? My guess was that your soldier models have to much detail in them. Do you guys have any suggestions that I can do to make the mods run faster? I mean I love having huge battles but I dislike vanilla RTW.

The models are as you say more detailed, but it's generally the vegetation of RTR that is a fps killer

Try turning down grass and vegetation.

I have grass set to low and vegetation to medium in RTR VII for large battles. Visually, it makes almost no difference
Units are more detailed, but don't cause that much lag, really.
For the smaller battles, I tend to set the graphics to high again.

As I said I had everything set to either the lowest setting or off if I could get it on both tests. Its something about RTR that makes it run waay slower.

    EDIT:

If you haven't, turn off anti-aliasing and make sure unit detail isn't on the highest setting. Those generally eat up frame rates.

I turned off anti-aliasing, unit detail was at medium and everything else was either the lowest it could be or turned off for both tests. Its not that my computer can't run vanilla RTW. It runs a 12k+ battle smooth with the lowest settings on vanilla. Yet on ExRM it ran a 8k+ battle with so much lag it was unplayable. I'm curious if you guys know why and could possibly help me run it smoother.

UPDATE: Okay I just did a battle in FoE with 11+ soldiers and it ran with just a few hiccups. Thats so weird I am really confused now...what is it about ExRM that makes it run slow?

Great system mate, It should run ExRM with huge battles flawlessly, the thing that could be holding you back is the weak Processor

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your GFX-card, and try and have as few applications as possible running while you play. Bittorrents, MSN and other program can steal pretty much CPU.

That looks like an integrated gpu to me- if you have a few bucks might be worth picking up something in the ati 5700 rang second hand for 50 bucks. Go ask in the basement cos I'm not sure if I read the specs right on my iPhone. Also at that res you are probably CPU bound. Did you try plugging the laptop into the mains?

am I correct in assuming that RTW based games are not designed to take advantage of multi-core processors ?
what about the newer games from the TW stable ?

S2 will be the first one Boom which is a shame since I hardly doubt with multi core threading anyone would have an issue running the games.

so RTW-2 should be as well ? well that's a good news. bad news is it would probably be tough as hell to mod it.

I hope enough people have ticked the 'provide mod tools' option in CA's opinion poll.
