Default Alito sworn in as 110th Supreme Court justice

All I can say is FINALLY. I'm glad that the politicians can stop arugeing about this guy realizing they will get nothing out of him, as hes smart and will not let himself be open to attack, and HOPEFULLY work on important issues were facing right now.

Their is a lot of problems with foreign countries, like Iran, and domestic agendas they need to tackle than arugeing about a judge that the majority of congress was guarnteed to approve. Almost seems like they were purposely wasting time just so they didn't have to face issues that need to be resolved.

Alito? This was the Bush candidate for supreme court?!? (Perhaps some explanation would be good to us foreigners)!

Everyones saying that we can kiss Roe v Wade goodbye as soon as Alito puts on his robes...you think theres any truth to that or is just liberal propaganda?

Nah doubt it what will probably happen is Alito will take Requinst's vote on abortion and Robert's O'Conners and the status quo will remain. Alito is imo a true conservative as much as Ginsburg is a true liberal but Roberts strikes me as far more pragmatic and just because he is a conservative doesnt mean he'll vote to overturn it.

Honestly no sane republican would (or should) want Roe vs Wade overtturned for the simple fact the VAST majority of Americans believe in a woman's right to an abortion and will create a huge backlash. The issue Americans are far more flexible on are limits to abortion, parental notification, late term, multiple abortions etc those are the issues the can be addressed. Overturning Roe/Wade will create a huge political backlash that will do nothing but energize the left and alienate the middle and lets face facts (atleast imo) a woman DOES have a right to decide my only concern is there should be far more accountabilty for it with women who think abortion is birth control method rather then what it should be a tragic last choice decision.

Justinian, are you trying to say that you arent aware of a serious pro-life push in this country? Why do you think all the pro-life people voted for Bush in the first place? Because he wanted to protect marriage...and...also maybe this issue as well imo. Bush is just now making good on his promise to his supporters...and I think it will take some time, but eventually I think Roe v Wade will be overturned. Sometime between now and Jesus' second coming.

What does that have to do with it? If Roe vs. Wade is overturned then it will be up to the states, which is how it should be. Democracy, right?

It's like trying to pass a national law on gay marriage. That belongs in the states.

exactly my opinion as well. The thing is most people i've talked with this about think that roe v wade overturn would mean the banning of abortion.

No its not how it should be, what would that serve if only to make things even more inefficient and confusing? Poor little mary was raped in Georgia but she has to go to california for her abortion? This is just more misdirection anyway, they want us to stop thinking about the really important things so they throw curveballs at us.

Would that be a bad thing?

Alito? This was the Bush candidate for supreme court?!?
Yes. The Democrats tried to block him and failed.

Except Roe vs. Wade is a classic example of "We've know what we want, now let's make up a pretense for it". They passed it because abortion somehow tied in with a woman's right to privacy - what abortion and a woman's right to privacy has in common, God knows...

Whats funny about Roe vs Wade is if they overturn it, it means NOTHING.

Both side like spurting the propoganda that: "If roe v wade is overturned Abortion will be BANNED"

Which is simply not true. If its OVERTURNED it will be up the the individual state laws to make it illegal or not! Which means if people from the south want an abortion all they would have to do is go to a nortern state and they are free to do as they wish. Both sides would have you think otherwise for their own propoganda.

edit: I do think its ironic that Texas, a state that would probably ban abortion, executes children for crimes.

It will set things in motion to regain the sanctity of life in this country, but he does not have the power to repeal it right away.

This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Actually she would probably just have to go to florida, not enough people their are against abortion for such a law to pass.

Right well thats not really the point, are you guys really for this states system? Because seriously, I have little faith in states rights, federal law is what I'm most concerned about because that is the law with the most power and influence behind it. States rights? That died after the civil war, didnt it? All that remains is just a hollow husk of states rights. (feel free to drop some knowledge on my melon here)

edit-Justinian, whats wrong with that? Whats worse, killing some cells that arent even a recognizable human yet or bring a baby into this world, whose parents are unready or nonexistant, possibly on drugs, possibly shiftless and irresponsible....etc. I know two smack heads with an infant, I pity that infant greatly.

Yes, I'm for the states system. Different people live in different states. I don't like that humans are mass murdered in my state; too bad, this is where I live and abortion will always exist in New Jersey because of the huge Democrat majority. But that's democracy for ya.

I don't object to killing a clump of cells. But most abortions take place after that clump of cells has developed into a human.

Actually even if Alito voted to overturn Roe v Wade, there isn't a mjority on the Supreme Court unless some people changed their minds... unless I am mistaken. I could be... not sure. Anyways like people say it will become a state issue, meaning there will be states where abortion will be legal. It would just be a big step backwards if it was overturned.

Roe v. Wade not only addresses abortion as a national issue, but also some of the privacy issues that result from abortion cases (e.g. telling parents, having parents sign forms / telling husband, etc.) which is where the privacy thing comes from. Knda odd though as it is sorta unrelated...

I do think its ironic that Texas, a state that would probably ban abortion, executes children for crimes.
So true... Texas is messed up.

Well ... unless you get an abortion a month or so after a positive pregnancy test you're killing a developing human. I'm not exactly sure on my dates.

I like the states rights system, however if its used to abuse civil rights as it was in the past, laws should be made on the federal level to prevent it. Segregation was a huge problem when it came to states rights.

I'm personally FOR abortion but I want every area of the country to run things as their culture wishs. Not everone across the country is exactly the same, its diverse.

I think argueing like a thing such as roe v wade is pointless though. Seriously, removing it will have no effect except in SOME states and people will still be getting an abortion. It would just turn into something of a vacation.
