Default Buying Knights of the Old Republic from Steam: Good or Bad?

    Hi all,

I didn't know where to put this post at soooooo:

I want to buy Star Wars: Knights of the old republic 1 & 2

My issue is, Is there any reason why I should NOT buy from Steam?

I don't know if these 2 releases need any mods to improve upon them.

I have heard only the best from KOTOR 1 but KOTOR 2 seems to have ruffled some peoples feathers!

    Thanks for your help,
    hellas1

Steam is great, you cant go wrong with making a one-time purchase for a copy of a great game that you will never lose or get scratched. As for the game, KotoR 1 is an amazing game for its time (great story, game mechanics, customizations, userfriendly interface, great replay value/incentive) and still is pretty good graphic-wise.

KotoR 2 though is a real let down (for me at least) where it makes a poor attempt to pass the story from the first game onto the new, and only succeeds in making a meager story full of huge plot holes (basicallt every galaxy changeing thing you did in the first game, never happened in the second). Though its graphics seem a bit better.

I have it on steam, my disc copy was too damaged to use anymore.

I dont know about how good are the mods in steam, but there will probably be some people that would do the changes that one might need.

Good: It's a convenient and safe way to purchase games and a handy way to organise all your games in one place (well the ones you register with Steam that is). There's regular offers and promotions and the new year sales deals are an annual event with PC gamers.

Bad: It's not always the cheapest place to purchase games so it still pays to shop around.

Ugly: You haven't already played Knights of the Old Republic?!!!!??!!

KOTOR is IMO a must play even if your not a Star Wars geek as the storyline fro Bioware is compelling with compelling drama and dramatic twists. All the characters have there own back story which you can uncover and there's so much depth its almost impossible to experience all the content in one go and as such KOTOR has a lot of replay value.

The same can't be said for the 2nd game, KOTOR 2 is a very good game in its own right but will always be compared (unfairly) to the first game which was 3 years in development and KOTOR 2 which had 18 months in development. By the time you finish the 2nd game your name needn't be Sherlock Holmes to realise it was unfinished and it almost feels like you played through Beta version. It's a disgrace that this game never got finished, it's more challenging then the first game and the storyline while it was never going to be as good as the first was still a worthy of having a game that was actually completed.

I've had no issues with KotoR on Steam. The only known issue i've heard with the game at all is a problem where it gets annoyed at unusual monitor frequencies if the OS is Vista/7. Mostly Laptop screens that arn't technically 50/60Hz.

If you're running Vista or 7, it's a good idea to get KotOR 1 from Steam. Otherwise, it can be kind of temperamental to get working.

I bought Kotor 1 at one of the local stores cuz the steam price is too high for such an old game.

I must say, I bought 2 first, and absolutetly loved it. Both games had equal value in my opinion and were very much fun to play.
