Default Horrible Performance on Core i5 PC

    - Windows 7 64-bit
    - Rome Total War Gold from Steam (with BI too)
    - standard steam folder install path
    - tried using Dacia and One-Turn Campaign launchers
    - System: core i5 @2.67Ghz, 8Gb RAM DDR3 @1333, GTX460 1Gb (260.99 drivers)

The game runs horribly on the campaign map (fps drops to 5-ish when I try to move the camera or open an army/settlement menu), during battles (during battle deployment and when opening menu) and in the game's main menu.

I've installed the latest dx9 and the 4gb patch, to no result.

The game runs fine during battles, as long as I don't turn the camera too much or open the menu. The campaign map, however, is simply unplayable.

Please help, I'm tired of Medieval 2, I want some roman/spartan action, but I can't play like this.

PS: If I have to reinstall RTW and RS2 again, I might have to punch myself in the face. I've reinstalled at least 5 times, read each steam setup step carefully, yet this issue continues. It's frustrating. Yes, I have UAC turned off.

    Hi Kael BloodMoon,

Have you read the Performance suggestions in the release page?

    Its here:

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=386559

Off the top of my head, also check your preference.txt file in the preferences folder - one thing that was mandatory,I believe, was UNIT_USE_SHADERS:TRUE (or CTD gremlins happen) and check where it shows 'STRATEGY_RESOLUTION/STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION and BATTLE_RESOLUTION/BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION are all the same as your default screen resolution (may or may not help), just a few suggestions.

I play RSII with Win7 64bit w/Q9450 stock + 8gig ram and ATI 4870x2. I play with UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:TRUE and only get some slow down (nowhere near as low as you're experiencing) when there are 3 or more armies on the battlefield at once and when I zoom in to heavy forest or heavy concentration of fighting or lots of slings and arrows flying, otherwise runs smooth on campaign and battle maps.

Hopefully others can help you with your game gremlins. It really is great to play with huge armies in such beautiful terrain.

    Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks for the suggestions, Hunterbear. I tried everything you posted and the campaign map still runs badly. The battle map runs perfectly, so it's not the actual battles that annoy me, it's the fact that I have to wait almost 30 seconds between turns because of 10 second freezes before and after AI's turn, and every time I move the mouse to the edge of the screen while on the campaign map, the game freezes to the point of me wanting to punch the screen.

I've also noticed that this is not a RS issue, as I get the same problems with EB, SPQR and vanilla RTW. I guess it's something about the game engine and my PC that doesn't want to work properly. Has anyone managed to fix this? I can't possibly be the only one with this "gremlin". I don't want to wait until EB2 is released

KBM, I think you should OC your CPU, RTW only uses 1 core so a higher ghz is better.

looks like you got some issue with your rig...drivers,hardware/software configuration,setup...whatever it is seems not to work properly...I run win7 32bit with i5quad and 4gb ram and gt340 512mb (ddr5) and have not the slightest problem...smooth all-over performance although for the battles a Pentium IV with 3,2 Ghz would do far better as both RTW and M2TW only run on 1 core.
maybe its a graphic card driver issue or the screen resolution...
btw the 4gb patch is nonsens as according to CA statements RTW will never adress more than 2 gb ram anyway...you only encourage the build up of trashed memory cause RTW/BI and Alex seem to have a memory leak which CA never was able to fix totally although they claimed they had. More RAM would not do much anyway in RTW as the slow downs are processor related (1core only)
I dont use that 4gb nonsens and have perfect performance and over 100 hours without a single CTD. Exit the game every hour or so prevents trashed memory build up and cause of the i5 with only 2,67 Ghz and only 1 core in use I play huge units on medium detail and low vegetation details on 1280x1024 resolution and its just super smooth
