    Default Jesus or Joshua?

What is the real name of Jesus? From my understanding it was originally "Yeshua" in Aramaic. It was translated into Greek as "Iesous" and then translated into Latin as "Iesu" and into English as "Jesu" and finally "Jesus".

But if we skip all those translations and go directly from Aramaic to English we get Joshua. So wouldn't the actual name of Jesus Christ in English be "Joshua the Anointed One"?

Are you sure its from Aramaic? In Hebrew yeshua means salvation and its common for names in Hebrew to have a meaning.

    WarDude,

As far as I know off the top of my head it is Aramaic/Chaldean and it means God saves. When Joshua led the tribes across the dry river bed of the Jordan into the promised land it was of course physical reality to the tribes but to us it was a shadow and type of Jesus saving His own, the body that is the church. Hence the name of the leader to do that as Joshua was.

Yes. It's just used as a means to distinguish him from all the other Joshuas in the New Testament, and of the Old Testament history (there's a famous Joshua in the OT).

That makes sense, I thought it was something like that.

In Latin Jesus is Iesus. Iesu is the gen, dat, abl and voc cases.

There is some debate over his original name: Some claim it was Yēšūă, others that it was Yehoshua. Both of these are versions of the same name, so it is not impossible that he was known as both. Especially since he is thought to have traveled in to lands with different languages/dialects.

I think it really doesn't matter either way, it was certainly common for names to be spelt many different ways depending on who was writting them down (hell even in the 'recent' history of english it happens alot, just look at how many ways Shakespeare used to be spelt for instance) Let alone across a couple of dozen languages and nearly two thousand years.

To make a point about this, in Gibson's Passion of the Christ, filmed in the original ancient Aramaic all throughout, Jesus is plainly called "Ieshua". There's been no conspiracy

exactly Jesus is a (iirc) romanised version, just as we currently angliscise names to make them easier to say, the romans (and everyone else ofc) did exactly the same thing, doesn't change who they meant.

If people started claiming Yeshua, there would be a whole new string of advertising possibilities. "WWYD?" "Yeshua is my homeboy." It could be the cool, new, hip thing.

In the Russian translation of Bible, Joshua goes by the Name Jesus Navin
"I have not escaped punishment, as some may imagine; I am punished every hour I live for the folly of my life, and what it drove me to do. My enemy and I were mined from the same mortal seam; cast into the same furnace of creation, our images impressed on opposite sides of the same coin, separate, but not distinct, conjoined by some fatal alchemy. I killed him; but in doing so, I killed the best part of myself." -E.G.
