Icon1 Need help picking a new computer.

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.

Iam looking for a computer that will be able to run EB2 and Shogun total war 2 without flaw. Units on huge and settings on the higher side.

    Less than 2000dollars

Iam looking more towards a laptop for portability issues for Iam splitting it with my brother which is the main if not only reason for a laptop. If this is a bad choice please say so for I was told laptops these days perform just as well as desktops. The laptop I was looking at is the Toshiba Qosimo X505.

    1. A $2000 laptop will be able to get you good framerates and settings on those games. But they are more expensive and less powerful than a desktop. Price of portability.

    2. What country? What resolution?

    3. Do you want a pre-built system, or are you going to build it yourself?

I vouch for the sager n8150 that is one hell of a laptop, and this is supposed to come with the new AMD 6970m, which performs about the same as the 6870 desktop counterpart.
The price is going to be lower if you stick with AMD if you go for the Nvidia path you get a GTX 485m, which is the same chip as the new GTX 560ti.

The price tag for the Nvidia is going to be around 2000+, if you are going for the AMD camp, you are going to spend about 1600, with less performance, something about 7%.

I always vouch for laptops, and those are not heavy nor huge, they are 15.6'' and weight about 3kg. Those are sold through Sager (dont ever buy from them) and from some resellers (do buy from them, and they always price match, which is a great thing)

Now if you go for the desktop route, you can buy 2 desktops with about the same performance as the laptops. So no need to share unless space is a problem

This laptop should conquer Shogun 2. You might have to turn down some Graphics settings down, but otherwise this is an incredibly good laptop for newer games. I use it, it's small 15.6" screen makes for smaller resolutions making graphic rendering easier. What does that mean? Because the screen size is smaller you can turn the graphics settings up. It also sports 6GB of RAM, which is more than enough for SC2 or Shogun 2. It's i7 processor can turbo boost to nearly 3GHz during intense gaming, not to mention the optimizations that Shogun 2 has for i7 processors. It'll run beautifully on this rig.

For a desktop... this is what I suggest.

    CPU:i7-2500k
Motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV (Disabled at the moment, wait for 2 weeks itll be back up)
GPU: EVGA 580 GTX SC(you can overclock GPUs yourself, but I'm assuming you're noob"
Computer Case: HAF X or Corsair Obsidian 800D. Here's the selection...
    Monitor: ASUS VE248H 24" 1920x1080
    Drive: LG Black 10x BD-ROM 16x
    Hard Drive: 3x Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB 7200RPM
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 120GB(I'd get another one when money allows)
CPU Heatsink and Fan: Noctua NH-D14
    Computer Case Fans:Noctua NF-P14(140mm) 3x NZXT FS-200RB(200mm)
    Noctua NF-P12-1300 (120mm)
    Power Supply: Corsair 750HX

Total cost will be around 2200$

    EDIT:

also add thermal paste: Arctic Silver 5

The screen of the resolution has nothing to do with the size of it. Check the sony Z, it is a 13'' with a 1600*900 or 1920*1080 (not that the I like the 1080p res in such a small screen)

The screen on the Sager NP8150 is MUCH better, the contrast, color accuracy viewing angles... And if you buy from certain retailers there is an upgrade of the screen that can be purchased (I dont remember from where its from)

The turbo boost wont maintain AT ALL that level of performance during gaming. I do find it hard to believe that you posted that. The turbo boost in the first version of it was problematic due to the cooling of the laptops, and due to the fact that it couldnt maintain decent speed after long periods of load, which sandy bridge can. (not the advertised maximum, but not the astound difference that the lynnfield transplants could)

The quality of the Sager case is miles ahead from the MSI

    Seriously dont post about notebooks.

Turbo boost has been working fine for me... I'm not sure what you mean by problematic, but I've been nothing but impressed by the performance of the i7 on that platform.
