    Default Looking for a laptop

Well I'm not looking for one right now. In fact I'm looking to get one some time in June when I'll have amassed enough money. But I like to plan ahead. So some questions -

    1. For a price range up to $1,300 what's the best you can get in a laptop? I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, just one that's going to last me and make me pretty happy whenever I'm going away from my desktop.

    2. How much will prices decrease in five months? I know the computer world moves fast and what can be high end one day can be mid-end the next, which reflects a drop in price as well.

    3. Any companies that really, really suck to buy a laptop from? So far I've decided not to get a Toshiba. They all seem to have asinine fan placement, so that if you put it on your lap it will overheat quickly.

I would prefer to buy a brand new one - warranty, etc.

Edit: Wooooowww.... an HP laptop can be about the same price as a Sony Vaio but twice as fast.

That is actually really good, better than my current Desktop . If your unsure about that one though (Who would?) go to Newegg.com . Also, If you are afraid of it getting real hot, as Pentium 4's usually do (As Laptops usually have really puny fans), you can buy a cheap portable laptop cooler at Newegg.com or xoxide.com .

Yeah. I'm going to have to be very careful with it, I don't want it to overheat and get really screwed up like my brother's laptop.

How much do laptop coolers cost?

PS. That laptop I mentioned is an HP, zd8000 to be exact. Any reviews on HP products?

Get a Centrino. Stay away from anything that is known to run hot. Notebooks run hotter than desktops and with the added heat of all the components being so close together the notebook will experience slowdown. And slowdown isn't good at all.

I think a Centrino is a bit out of my price range. But I'm not sure... seeing as Intel's website doesn't appear to show the actual laptop, or its price...

The HP laptop is faster then that, and a bit cheaper. Plus as I said, my brother had a Toshiba Satellite series and it overheated easily. And my friend has one too, and his is all screwed up a few months after getting it. So I have a pretty low opinion of Toshiba's satellite series...

For laptops I would go with a Pentium M centrino notebook, or one of Intel's Core Duos. Also for graphics if you want to do any quality gaming a X600 is not enough, get at least a X700. They got laptops with good gaming graphics cards for less than $1400 on ewegg.

BTW, a notebook cooler does NOTHING in helping to cool the laptop, just save your money and use the exctra 50 dollars on a cooler running notebook.

The laptop won't be for gaming though. The X600 will suit my needs - I'd only be playing old RTS and games like MTW on it, really.

1.7 GHZ P-M is considerablely faster then a 2.8ghz P4. Also, never buy a laptop with a P4 in it, they suck up so much power and generate so much heat that they usually don't last very long on battery power, and they will burn the hell out of your legs.

You said the Centrinos were not in your price range...I was merely proving you wrong

By the way, a notebook cooler do help - your legs can't take the heat from a P4 laptop.

This is going to sound really stupid, but I got a mac laptop. I use a PC, so there of course are differences. But they come with standard bluetooth, wireless, etc. Remember that the stats aren't the same, my 1.3Ghz is about a 2.4 Ghz for a PC. But with a Mac, you will get a lot of standard applications. If you aren't playing games, just make sure that what you do use is availablel on a mac. If it is, I would sugguest it; they have very good battery life and are all-around great laptops.

Just wait for the new laptops, with the Intel chips.

Or hell, get a ibook G4, it is fast enough, and it is cheaper if you actually have to pay for Anti-virus.

Fujitsu Amilo 800 at best buy. I have it for a year now and have perfect performance even for RTW.

ATI Mobility Radeon sucks for games, wil not run RTW for instance.

Well after checking some reviewing sites, the Dell Inspiron 6000 is ranked highest. Any comments? I personally hate Dell and everything they produce, and hear lots of bad things, but the reviews are good... also there's the Toshiba Satellite M45, does it have the same crappy fan placement as earlier models?

Dell's laptops are OK, but I still would recommend buying it off newegg, you will get a better deal.

Also if you are going Mac get one of the new core duos, those thing are blazing fast.
