    Default 4 Powers Mod (idea)

Something i hate about the mods of RTW (specifically EB) is how slow the turns are cuz of all the damn factions. Then it came to me. Why not have a mod that focuses...in great detail...on just a few factions and render the rest as mere tribes with AOR units to be picked up by any power with the strength to conquer the territory. Of course some units would be assigned naturally to certain powers because of historic ties, but like in most EB any faction could (in theory) recruit them.

so what factions deserve place? well in about 240 AD, the Persian philosopher Mani claimed their were only four great powers in the world.

    Rome
    Axum
    Persia
    China

Rome of course conquered just about all of Europe and would have a rediculous roster of professional soldiers and barbarian levees.

Axum ruled most of northeast Africa and a good bit of Arabia providing exotic units and a tough theatre for would-be world conquerors.

Persia was experiencing a rennaisance under the Sassanains whom bumped heads with Rome constantly and dominated the center of the east west land trade.

China is inmeasurably old and immensely powerful but ripe with civil strife.

I suggest a mod with ONLY these factions duking it out to conquer the old world. Everything between Japan and Ireland, Denmark and Somalia. There are maps like that already. I know plenty on African units and the rosters of the other factions are easy to find. Best of all....no slow turns. Keep it moving and keep conquering!

Time frame would be 275 AD (rise of Jin Dynasty China) to 476 AD (fall of Western Rome)

So, what do you all think?

Only 4 playable main factions sounds a little limited, few 8 or 9 would be better.

I think with so few factions you would need to concentrate on a specific location with a whole lot of detail. For example lets say the Isles:

    Saxons
    Scots
    Irish
    Wales

To me that would be better than picking 4 factions spread across the globe which would guarantee no detail, and maxed regions.

Mmm... If you use more common factions, you can have more 'special' units!
Btw, al the things you posted are English or British

    Saxons are Germanic
    Irish are Celt or Gaels
    Scots are Celt or Gaels
    Welsh are Celt or Gaels

When these four groups were fighting in the Isles there were no English. There were Angles and Saxons who were Germanic from Denmark/Northern Germany. English is an amalgamation of the result of these people along with Normans and Danes and Romans.

I guess the Romans called the aboriginies of the bigger island Brythons and Picts, and they called present day England and Wales Brittania. . They called the Irish Scoti. You shouldn't call Irish English or British it is offensive to them. Ireland is no more British or part of the British Isles than Great Britain is part of Ireland and part of the Irish Isles.

well, i figure with only four factions you could go into a lot of detail with each one. But let's say we boost it to 12, there should be two semi-major factions peripheral to the major powers.

Roman Empire, German Tribes and Gaelic Tribes
Aksumite Empire, Nubian Tribes and Arabian Tribes
Sassanid Empire, Kushan Tribes and Tibetan Tribes
Jin Empire, Xianbei Tribes and Korean Tribes

This would leave 12 factions. 4 major empires and 8 tribal factions. The tribal factions would have units from all over their region. For example, the German tribes would have visigoth and saxon units. In a custom battle they will be a lot of fun to play as and fight against. The imperial factions will have to rely on better quality units and their checkbooks to buy up mercenaries.

In summary, my idea is to have one bad ass empire surrounded by masses of barbarians in each point of the map. I don't want the tribes to be conquerable, but if I have to in order for the faction to be playable, then I'd put the capital way out in frickin Finland or somewhere so far from imperial grasps that it would be nearly impossible.
