Default New Zealand witnesses it's "darkest day"

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says 65 people died in the earthquake that devastated Christchurch today.
''The death toll I have at the moment is 65 and that may rise. So it's an absolute tragedy for this city, for New Zealand, for the people that we care so much about,'' Mr Key told TVNZ. ''It's a terrifying time for the people of Canterbury.''

He said: "We may be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day."
As thousands of shocked people wandered the rubble-strewn streets of Christchurch after today's devastating and deadly earthquake, emergency workers were searching for survivors.
The 6.3 magnitude quake - classed by experts as an aftershock to last September's 7.1 quake - struck at 12.51pm (10.51am AEDT).

The tremor brought down buildings on two buses, fractured gas and water mains, started fires, and badly damaged phone networks. Since then there have been a series of aftershocks, the strongest at 5.7.

Terrible times for both Australia and New Zealand with the recent Queensland floods and now this tradgedy, watching news coverage of it now, the damage is catastrophic with buildings being completely levelled by the quake.

Lets not be sad over that gods will is done. He is all powerful and his work is mysterious. Lets rejoice that he still cares enough about this earth to get involved.
You have a certain mentality, a "you vs them" and i know it is hard to see, but it is only your imagination which makes up enemies everywhere. I haven't professed anything but being neutral so why Do you feel the need to defend yourself from me?. Truly What are you defending? when there is nobody attacking?

    ...

My condolences to the families of the dead, this is certainly a tragedy, but the sentence above made me laugh.
when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.

Indeed although the death toll still remains at 65 which it has for a few hours, as well as reports of many missing persons being found. Although sadly Christchurch's 130 year old cathedral has suffered sever damage with one of it's spires being torn apart.

My heart goes to the families of the dead and the injured in the earthquake. May God bless them all.

Both male and female walruses have tusks and have been observed using these overgrown teeth to help pull themselves out of the water.

The mustached and long-tusked walrus is most often found near the Arctic Circle, lying on the ice with hundreds of companions. These marine mammals are extremely sociable, prone to loudly bellowing and snorting at one another, but are aggressive during mating season. With wrinkled brown and pink hides, walruses are distinguished by their long white tusks, grizzly whiskers, flat flipper, and bodies full of blubber.
Walruses use their iconic long tusks for a variety of reasons, each of which makes their lives in the Arctic a bit easier. They use them to haul their enormous bodies out of frigid waters, thus their "tooth-walking" label, and to break breathing holes into ice from below. Their tusks, which are found on both males and females, can extend to about three feet (one meter), and are, in fact, large canine teeth, which grow throughout their lives. Male walruses, or bulls, also employ their tusks aggressively to maintain territory and, during mating season, to protect their harems of females, or cows.
The walrus' other characteristic features are equally useful. As their favorite meals, particularly shellfish, are found near the dark ocean floor, walruses use their extremely sensitive whiskers, called mustacial vibrissae, as detection devices. Their blubbery bodies allow them to live comfortably in the Arctic region—walruses are capable of slowing their heartbeats in order to withstand the polar temperatures of the surrounding waters.
The two subspecies of walrus are divided geographically. Atlantic walruses inhabit coastal areas from northeastern Canada to Greenland, while Pacific walruses inhabit the northern seas off Russia and Alaska, migrating seasonally from their southern range in the Bering Sea—where they are found on the pack ice in winter—to the Chukchi Sea. Female Pacific walruses give birth to calves during the spring migration north.
Only Native Americans are currently allowed to hunt walruses, as the species' survival was threatened by past overhunting. Their tusks, oil, skin, and meat were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that the walrus was hunted to extinction in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Tragic event, no doubt, but is this actually the worst thing that has ever happened to NZ?

I believe so. If you take economical factrs into consideration. I mean we had our boxing day sale just a few weeks ago becuase on the actual boxing day we got an earthquake and no one wanted to go back into town for a while. Insurance companies are probably very frustrated seeing as they have just spend a lot of money of the last earthquake. But the thing about erebus is that it only affected a few people. With the earthquake, everyone suffers in some way.

This is another couple of billion worth of dollars gone. As for casualties, we dont know for sure. I think its about 60 or 70 atm. We have lost a few iconic buildings which are very important to the tourism industry. The 2 cathedrals especially the Anglican one in the square just a few posts up.

Looking on wikipedia. Most of NZ disasters with the greatest loss of life were shipwrecks in the 1800s

^^I am going to go out on a limb and say no. I think Sauron rising up and trying to take over the world sort of topped this.

In all seriousness though it is very bad news. RIP those who have died.

Funny how NZ and Australia are constantly rated as the world's best place to live. They don't seem to factor in your home being blown away and all of your possessions being swallowed in a massive seismic chasm when they make those lists, because I don't see that happening in Northern Europe.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."
