No surround sound on onboard cards?

So I'm getting into medieval 2 after a long while, and there's one thing that bugs me. I can't seem to get surround sound with my VIA HD audio card. The only surround options in the game (and not even 5.1, 4 speakers top) seem to be via creative labs EAX, that I can't seem to activate. A friend of mine with a different onboard card has the same problem.

Did anyone manage to make it work in any way?

yep, but of course it's just the front left and right speakers.

What you need is a dedicated sound card.

you mean in medieval or in any game? because in every single other game i have 5.1 (or even 7.1 in most of the new ones actually) surround sound is perfectly supported

How many of those games that are fully supported are over six years old?

Look, this game was designed back in the day when AGP was relatively new. It hasn't had anything approaching an upgrade in several years. The game likely doesn't support your hardware - that's the fact.

The question here is does your VIA onboard usually support EAX on other games? I'm not too familiar with it so I can't be sure. If it does then what version?

My guess is that you're out of luck but you could invest some time looking into older drivers. I would warn that it would probably be a waste of time though. Good luck!
