1.4.3 patch + Steam = Cant's start campaign

Hello all,

I'll do a separate topic that we we have a clear title for it.

It seems that people with steam who patched to 1.4.3 (and 1.4.4, since most peeps just patched twice in a row) and who got steam cannot start the single player campaign, it boots them back to an alternative version of the single player menu, with "chaos storm" not available (when clicking on "back" in that situation one would revert to the original single player menu).

Custom / Quick / historical battles work perfectly fine, the only problem is when clicking "start" on a campaign.

To summarize the situation here's the following information :

I have steam installed on a dedicated drive (G, i've installed previously the 1.4, 1.4.1 + full music, 1.4.2 some mods like the armies unlocker and galloper's (orks voices were just too good), it always worked perfectly (except the few unexpected errors). I also had english translation for 1.4.2.

When i used 1.4.3 and 1.4.4 then english trad on that install, the bug appeared.

I uninstalled everything, did a clean install with the 1.4.2 full english (which works perfectly fine, i'm doing a chaos campaign atm), patched 1.4.3 then 1.4.4 added english translation and the bug appeared. (i removed the base folder when patching to 1.4.4 as required).

I did 1.4.2 full english then 1.4.3 then english trad for 1.4.3 : Bug appeared.

I did 1.4, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.3 : Bug appeared; i added english trad for 1.4.3 : Bug was still there.

I did, 1.4, kumul 1.4.4 : Bug. 1.4 + kumul 1.4.4 + english trad for 1.4.4 : Bug.

Of course i got UAC disabled, i used the registery editor (as per below) to launch COW from Steam, works perfectly with 1.4.2 :

Also, i got no logs in medieval total war / logs.

Finally, just to make things perfectly clear : The game works perfectly with 1.4.2, being it full english or russian incremental patches + music, the bug appears only with 1.4.3+

If someone could please give me the solution (along with all other dudes in the same situation) it'd be a life saver !!

Ah yeah, i did a fresh install on another pc and got the same bug...

You should post your problem in the bugs thread in the correct format with a copy of your error log, that is the only way other forum members can help you. Menu bounce-back is easily fixed in most cases but we need to see your log.

As i stated in my post above i got no log in the "logs" folder, hence i can't post one.

There must be an error log, you are probably looking in the wrong place.

Open warhammer.cfg with notepad and look for the line that will start [log]

Mine is as below because I specified my log to report to my mod folder:

But I think the default error reporting location is somewhere in your virtual drive, I don't remember exactly.

If you specify an exact location you *will* get an error log generated to that folder, just change yours as appropriate and look for it there afterwards, then post back and we can have a look.

Have you replaced the descr_strat.txt with the one that is provided with the translation?

Edit : BTW i just patched 1.4.3 then 1.4.4 over the 1.4.2 full english to give u the crash (i reinstalled the full english earlier to play).
If i try to resume my old save it crashes too.

Yes the error is the last line, which refers to Fort Schippel Province.

Comparing it to my working copy, there is no difference, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I had teething problems with 1.4.3 but managed to fix them manually, your error log refers to a line where I can see no problem.

You're running the game as an administrator? And no torrents or other memory hungry programs running in the background? Try lowering your graphics settings, and also set your map to *not* follow enemy movement - those tricks work for me when I'm trying to fix things.

Well it's not a CTD it's just that when i click on "start" for the single player campaign, i go back to the single player menu screen, simply. The game doesn't crash.

And your install is:

1.4, 1.4 English, 1.4.4 cumulative, then 1.4.4 English?

And like I asked above, you are running as administrator?

Hm the strangest of things happened, i downloaded galloper's mod for 1.4.4 (0.2.5) and now i can start the campaign Oo ?? I, however, don't have the voices, i'll try with his megaupload version.

Other weird weird stuff is that, the first time the campaign worked, i had like my UI back in Russian at 80%; now it's back to English.. i'll keep u informed to see if it keeps working in bout 30 mins.

Also, i changed something else (that might be it) i set the medieval total war II folder as "total modification" rights for all authentified users.
