The generic legionaries? Are these the republican ones you are talking about? THey don't have a first cohort do they? And the named legions ones have more men in their first cohort unless there are other legions that i can't remember in between hte imperial ones and the republican ones.![]()
I mean the legions without names and numbers, its called Roman Legionaries I believe. If there is no upgrades, the units' strength is the same with the Polybian legions.
It just a phase between the polybian cohorts (principes and hastati) and the named and numbered legions. Im asuming that historically it would also take a certain amount of time to switch onto the reformed legions. It dont think this happened over night. As for the strength of the 1st cohorts is just what Nerzhulen said, morale bonus on nearby troops and more soldiers. And from my side... the eagle is just awesome dude![]()
Actually, the main point of them is that they have the legion's eagle, and so provide a morale boost to nearby units. The reason they have the same number of soldiers as a normal Cohort is that the introduction of double-strength first cohorts didn't occur until the Principate (i.e. sometime after Augustus took charge), so technically, the first named and numbered legions shouldn't have them either initially, but since they did get them when the change was introduced, then it seems logical for them to have them (otherwise they'd need two first cohort units per legion, which is just impractical).
