CTD Questions

I love this game, definitely my favorite mod of any Total War Game. I just recently tried playing Medieval II Total War again and after playing this game, the map just feels puny and insignificant, the battles easy, and the campaign a joke. This is how a Total War game should be made.

But I also played Third Age Total War (cool mod too) and remembered why this mod bothers me so dearly... CTD problems. Why did playing that mod remind me why this game frustrates me? I could play as many battles as I wanted without the threat of a crash.

Regularly after battles this game will crash. Why or how, I dont know. Sometimes it will crash when the loading screen comes up, sometimes I will do a battle, click around for awhile and then the game will crash on the campaign map, sometimes I will do like 4-5 battles before the game crashes, sometimes I will only finish one battle before the game crashes. All I know is that the crash problems are directly related to when I fight battles which makes me wary to fight big battles that could take 40 minutes (the best battles too unfortunately) because I am afraid all my progress will be lost and the battle for nothing. So I autoresolve to often which is frustrating because casualties are often to high for acceptability. When the game crashes after a big battle... just frustration.

Is this just the game is? I desperately want to fix this so I dont have to deal with the constant threat of a CTD. Is it anything I do? Like when I save before a battle (in mid turn when I am attacked) because I dont want to fight it then and I then I come back later and fight it but cant start the script until after the turn is finished? Is my constant use of console commands doing anything (I would guess not but what do I know)? Do I make to many watchtowers (I make tons)? Is my game just loaded bad? Is it my computer? Does this happen to everyone?

I adore this game but I fear it is unplayable if I have to live under the constant fear of a CTD destroying my progress. I have just pushed through it before but after playing another game without the same problems I have reconsidered. Help please?

CTD's after battles can be avoided by
- waiting for 20 seconds at the battle result screen before returning to campaign map
- increasing RAM up to 3GB
- making breaks after ~2h of playing

Check the Frequently encountered issues for repeatable crashes.

Sadly we have to live with the RTW engine, EB maxes it totally out., so small errors in Vanilla can become bad things.
