Tablet for Grandma

I don't know anyone particularly techy, so here it goes:

My grandma's great, but like most at her age she finds computers confusing. I want to get her something that's accessible and lets her use The Internet. While there's one obvious candidate, Apple's iPad, I'm not giving Steve Jobs the pleaure (fool me once etc.).

So, what tablet PC do you think is simplest?

I would check out the Archos 70. It's nice, well made, etc. It's no iPad, and it runs Android, but if you get a decent browser on it, (Dolphin's not bad) the thing's a charm.

Apple's over-simplified interface would probably be best for her, though.

Well seeing as they either run android or it's an ipad, pick anyone which runs a decent version of android (2.2 or greater), the samsung galaxy tab is supposed to be good it's quite expencive though

The problem with Android is that it's more barebones, and made for computer techies. It's founded around open development, and capabilities, which isn't really good for a grandma. From her perspective, it'd probably be like using Windows 95 vs using Windows 7. There's the occasional crash, and freeze, so that might throw her off.

Apple would be a much better alternative for someone with less of an inclination for technology. I've never used the Galaxy Tab (is it out yet?) so I can't comment on that, but if I had to guess, it'll be (it's) stabler than Android.

If you go with Android, get an Archos 70 or newer. It's no iPad, but the hardware is really nice. (Avoid the Archos 101 at all cost! It's crap!)

eh? Archos runs on android mate lol. But there is nothing wrong with that tablet anyway, specs are decent and it's alot cheaper than the galaxy tab. You may need to upgrade it to android 2.2 on purchase however as it will probably be running 2.1 from the box.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll give the iPad another thought. Guess I was thinking too much about what I would want in a tablet.

Yeah, isn't that what I said? The reason NOT to get an Archos 70 for gram?

Anyway, good luck with what you get. You could always take her to an Apple store, if there's one near you, and let her try it out.

It pains me to refer someone to Apple, but it's the simplest thing in this case.
