Default Favorite Quotes from ALL of Tolkien's Writings (no movie quotes)

I want to replace the existing quotes in TATW with new ones from all the books, so I would like everyone to post their favorite quotes. Break them up if they are too long, as the loading times only take about 10-15 seconds on average. Obviously you don't have to scour the books, just type in LOTR book quotes on the net and paste some you like and I will add them to the game.

Thank you to Agamaran for his work on adding quotes http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=421665, I merely want to improve upon his work with help from the community.

i have yet to see a thread like this, i like the quotes in TA but i agree they could be improved, and so without futher ado here are a few things i found

"Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes." - Frodo

    and my personal favorite

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." - Bilbo

    anyway hope they help.

I don't see the quotes as all bad, but yes, they grow old and I always prefer quotes from the books over the ones from the movies.

One of the passages that I like very much is the dialogue between Gandalf and Saruman.
    Here a few good quotes:

"The Elder Days are gone. The Middle Days are passing. The Younger Days are beginning. The Time of the Elves is over, but our time is at hand: The World of Men which we must rule." - Saruman

"A new power is rising. Against it the old allies and policies will not avail us at all. There is no hope left in Elves or dying Númenor." - Saruman

There are others, but they won't work that good out of context.
    And of course also nice:

"You cannot enter here. Go back to the abyss prepared for you. Go back!" - Gandalf

"Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" - Whitch-King of Angmar

"What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?" said William.

"And can yer cook 'em?" said Tom.

"Yer can try," said Bert, picking up a skewer.

"Then you would have us retreat to Minas Tirith, or Dol Amroth, or to Dunharrow, and there sit like children on sand castles when the tide is flowing?" -- Prince Imrahil during the last debate.

"Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" -- Éomer, son of Eomund, Third Marshal of the Riddermark

"And so at length Éomer and Aragorn met in the midst of the battle, and they leaned on their swords and looked at one another and were glad" -- The Battle of the Pelennor Fields

"Ai-oi!, The orcs are behind the wall!. Ai-oi! Come, Legolas! There are enough for us both. Khazad ai-menu!" -- Gimli, son of Gloin -- Helm's Deep

Hmm... a pity I no longer recollect half as many quotes from memory as I used to. I'll have to scrounge up a few more after work.

What about "Axes of the dwarves!!!!! The dwarves are upon you!!!!!!" I think it was from Gimli at Helm's deep but not 100%. He said it in Dwarvish but I think that even with the translation it won't be too long. Also maybe Eomer's speech could be put in and not given to Theoden like in the movie. Much better that way I think. Haven't read that part in a while though.

"Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mânu!" is the Khuzdul translation of the phrase.

Great was the triumph of Morgoth, and his design was accomplished in a manner after his own heart; for Men took the lives of Men, and betrayed the Eldar, and fear and hatred were aroused among those that should have been united against him. - Quenta Silmarillion

This was the beginning of that people that in the Grey-elven speech are called the Dúnedain: the Númenóreans, Kings among Men. - the Akallabêth

But he, finding that he was betrayed and that the Elves were not deceived, was filled with wrath; and he came against them with open war - (About Sauron) Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age

After Morgoth to the ends of the Earth! War shall he have and hatred undying. - Fënor leads noldor into exile in Middle Earth; Quenta Silmarillion

Man! Indeed not! I am a hobbit and no more valiant than I am a man, save perhaps now and again by necessity. - Peregrin "Pippin" Took, Return of the King

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
    - Théoden King of the Mark, Return of the King

But long ago he rode away, and where he dwelleth none can say, for into darkness fell his star, in Mordor where the shadows are. - About elven king Gil-galad, Fellowship of the Ring

I think its already in there, or at least the movie alteration of it, but "I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and if by life or death I can save you, I will"

On Strider/Aragorn (this is part of a poem he recites to verify himself to the hobbits) -

All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Gandalf on the one ring - "It is far more powerful than I ever dared to think at first, so powerful that in the end it would utterly overcome anyone of mortal race who possessed it. It would possess him".

'Speak no evil of the Lady Galadriel! You know not what you say. There is in her and in this land no evil, unless a man bring it hither himself. Then, let him beware!" - Aragorn on Lothlorien.

"Not so hasty! You call yourselves hobbits? But you should not go telling just anybody. You'll be letting out your own right names if you're not careful!" - Treebeard to Merry and Pippin.

'Yes, I am white now,' said Gandalf. 'Indeed I am Saruman, one might almost say, Saruman as he should have been" - Gandalf on his rebirth

"You deceive yourself. He would have stretched out his hand to this thing, and taking it he would have fallen. He would have kept it for his own, and when he returned you would not have known your son" - Gandalf to Denethor on Boromir.

"A great black shape against the fires beyond loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face" - The Witch King of Angmar enters (briefly) Minas Tirith.

'Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye.' - The Witch King threatens Eowyn for trying to hold her ground.

"No living man am I! You look upon a woman! Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you if you touch him!" - Eowyn defies the Witch King.

"I am the daughter of Elrond. I shall not go with him now when he departs to the Havens; for mine is the choice of Lúthien, and as she so have I chosen, both the sweet and the bitter" - Arwen on her decision to marry Aragorn.

He drew a deep breath. "Well, I'm back," he said - Sam, having seen off Frodo and Gandalf to the Grey Havens. Pretty sure its the final line in the books.

    And my favourite:

"Oh , not another elf!" - Hugo Dyson, Tolkien's friend and fellow academic, during a reading of The Lord of the Rings at a meeting of the Inklings (A group of writers who they were both part of)

"There are seven emotions: joy, anger, anxiety, adoration, grief, fear, and hate, and if a man does not give way to these he can be called patient. I am not as strong as I might be, but I have long known and practiced patience. And if my descendants wish to be as I am, they must study patience"

    Tokugawa Ieyasu

    I'm definitely supporting this one;

If it's too long (for a quotation or a signature ) split it in two...

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
    A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be the blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
The second verse is even more epic

Oh and of course: "Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place I will abide and my heirs, unto the ending of the world." - Elendil (and Aragorn) - or was that already in?

"the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise"- Return of the King, Frodo passing into the west.

One that didn't make it into LOTR from "History of Middle-Earth":

"Fine days, fine days! Blood on blade and fire on hill, smoke in sky and tears on earth. Merry weather, my friends, to bring a real New Year!" - unknown orc

    I also like:

"Always more people coming to Mordor. One day all the peoples will be inside." - Gollum

It is ever so with the things that Men begin: there is a frost in Spring, or a blight in Summer, and they fail of their promise
