Steam Issue

I'm trying to play the Chivalry Total War: Fall of the Cross, Rise of the Crescent mod, but I have a problem. First, let me say that I am using Steam. I downloaded the file and extracted it to my Rome: Total War Gold directory. I made a shortcut for my RTW.exe and put in the required information into the target line. I even did the same thing to the Steam launch settings. Nothing works. The game will load, buy my start bar at the bottom of my screen is still visible during the game, and half of the right side of my screen shows me desktop (or whatever else I have up). I also installed the hotfix.

Do you know what the problem is? I really want to play this mod.

Disclaimer - I've never played this mod. Take my advice with a grain of salt.

I've highlighted the above for a reason - this sounds like a resolution problem and possibly a problem with the game not transitioning fully into windowed mode. By "start bar" I'm assuming that you mean the Windows taskbar. I'm assuming this because you say you can still see some of your Desktop while playing the game.

Is there a config file for this mod? Does it have an option like "Windowed = 1" or "Windowed = 0" in the .cfg file?

Lastly, could you point me in the direction of the install instructions for this mod please? What is the hotfix? And what steps have you taken to get around any Steam issues? Good luck!

Ok, that link mentions a problem regarding graphics issues that sound very much like what you're experiencing. They report that the fix is to delete the Preferences file in your R:TW folder. Give that a try and let the game generate a new file.

If you can't find it I might be able to talk you through it but I don't own the game so it will be blind advice. Just try to locate the folder R:TW is installed to and look for any file named "preferences.cfg" - that's the most likely file name. Make a back up of it just in case. Let us know if this works for you. Good luck!

EDIT: It's seems to be a brand new mod. You could ask this same question there and you'll get advice from the people that made the mod and play it. Good luck!

Thanks, yeah I've read about that. I actually didn't delete the file (because that didn't work). Rather, I changed the "Use Widescreen" option to "True." Now the loading screen, menus and strategy map work fine. It's only the Battle Map that doesn't work. I can still play the game, but yet I can still see a huge chunk of the right desktop as well as the entirety of my task bar.

I posted a thread at the mod's forum, but no one answered it. I asked a question about it in the mod's specific thread, and the answers I received didn't help.

I'm thinking of just reinstalling the entire mod.

Hmm. Yes that would help. Also check out any preference file for the vanilla R:TW as well. Maybe there is a conflict there somewhere.

I have a question - does this same problem happen when you play the vanilla R:TW? As far as I can tell those .cfgs are nearly identical.

Also one thing to point out - both say "USE_WIDESCREEN:FALSE". Change this to true and try again. Make sure when you save the change that the file isn't read-only beforehand. After you've saved the file successfully then switch it to read-only to prevent the game making changes you don't want.

Vanilla Rome works fine. And I've tried it with TRUE and the only thing that happens is the menu/loading screens/strategy map works, but the Battle Map is still effed up. I've done all of that and still it doesn't want to work.

Thank you. That's the response I was hoping for. The problem is that it still doesn't explain the fault but dials it down.

Please do the following - go into the preferences file for the mod and change the value "BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1440x900" to 1920x1080. This will change the battle resolution to match your strategic map resolution hopefully.

What's striking me is that the menus and campaign map are fine in widescreen but the battle map is screwed up when it forces the resolution change. Something isn't right there.

I'll call in some reinforcements on this one and we'll see if we can't figure this out for you. Let us know what you come up with. Good luck!

I've uninstalled the thing and have since installed The Fourth Age: Total War. If I ever get back to Chivalry (it's really frustrated me and I'm taking a break), I'll definitely come back here. Btw, what is dxdiag?
