    Default Question

I've got a question about SPQR (Romani). I'm playing as the Romans and have, well, split Gaul in pieces. I control centeral gaul, Averni (sp?) holds mid-eastern gaul, and the other gaulic faction owns north-western gaul, while rebels hold south-western gaul. I have been sending a steady streem of early roman units into gaul for my general. The reason that I haven't been recruting from gaul for my army is because I don't get any roman units there. I thought it was no big deal, I just had to upgrade my barracks right? Well, for some reason I have the second highest level of barracks and all I can recruit is some crapy gaulic warriors. I engaged a army that had no leader, was out numgered by three to one in my favor, I thought this was going to be an easy win, right? Wrong! I faught this small army with my medium size army and I got my rear handed to me.

So, I thought "What the hell, why can't I get any good units!?" I looked around in the program files (very funny with the different internal names. Took me like 1/2 an hour to figure out the correct names) and all of the roman units need "type_1 government" buildings or whatever, which is Italian regional government which means that no matter how high the level of barracks, I'll be stuck with the crapy units that someone vomited up from God knows where when I'm recruiting from somewhere other than Italy. THIS IS BULL @!>#<!!! Realistic or not, it's the most crazy things I've ever heard of. I can understand if you have no government at all, or one from another faction, or if you have a lightly romanized government, but for even a heavily romanized government? Come on, now! The EB team did great in other areas, but this is simply stupid. I hope this is just a bug that gets corrected in a later release.

Now, regardless of whether this is on purpose or not, I want to fix this so that I can use roman units in both italian government and heavily romanized governments. Would someone please help?

(I know this sounds like a rant, but I lost a great general that conquered most of gaul in less than three years and most of my military due to this, in my opinion, crazy principle of EB. I like everything else and this is easily one of my favorite mods, but regardless of how realistic this is, this is not fun at all, and I myself would easily chose enjoyment over realism. EB Team, please don't take this the wrong way, you guys did far better than I could ever have deamed of doing, but I think that this mechanism should be changed, or at least make it known how one can change this, if at all. If not, I think I'll have to go back to one of the other mods such as RTR over this one, which would be a real shame considering how much work you guys have put into this. Keep up the good work, guys.)

Hehe. Its not a bug its a feature.
Romans didnt train Pre Marius legions outside Italy and you cant do this also.
EB is realism mod and we wont change it.
Just train them in Italy and ship them to front as reinforcments.
And use some auxilia to boost your army.

From your post it looks like you know how EDB file works.
If you want to make game easier (vanila like ) just edit roman units in EDB, for example remove gov 1 restriction.

It's rare for factions to be able to train their own units outside of a small area. It's not the just the romans, and once you get Marian legions you'll be able to train them over a HUGE area, something other factions don't get.

Well, if its not a bug, I just might make this into a mini mod.

I don't want to remove the government type restriction altogether, just make the troops recruitable with type one (homeland government) and type 2 (romanized province).

I tried tinkering around with the file and this is what I did. I went to the barracks properties and copied all the roman units and changed the government type needed to type 2. I then pasted this below the original pre-marian units in the export_descr_buildings file. Saved and started a game. I used show_err and it said that I messed something up so I went back and I forgot to change the "type1lvl2" to "type2lvl2". Tried starting the game again and it loaded up, started my game, but the effects didn't take effect and all I could get was those auxila units. Since it was the export_descr_buildings file I would think that it would take effect in a saved game if I got everthing right (it always has before anyway). Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

Please don't double post! If you forgot to say something in your post, then don't post a new one, just edit your previous post using the edit button. - Trajan

Is that right? Hm, just another reason to get those reformes! Did you guys change the requirements for the reforms? If I remember correctly, in vanila, you had to build a imperial palace and have the year like 160 B.C. or something. Thanks for the help.

As it is now unit recruitment is restricted by province.
Take your modified antry and remove every alpha, epsilon, theta etc... unit restrictions.
Leave only gov lvl2 and romans restriction. Now you should be able to build unit everywhere if you have lvl2 gov building i think. But i am not EDB guy so i can get this one wrong.
Reforms happen 209 you get Pollybian legionaries and in 107 you get Marius reforms.
In the future we will make them dinamic.

I tested it out, and sure enough it works. I'm going to play around a bit to make sure I got all the, eh, pre-polybian reforms I guess you'd call it. I might try to do all the other Roman units later. Thanks again for your help.
