Go around them. Attack from the sides and rear where possible.

If they outnumber you severly, then fight them on walls only, since your legionaries will have the advantage there. But try to outflank them and attack them in the back on the field of battle, as Seleukos said.

Even in history, the Legionaries tended to get a mighty good beating against the phalanx. Victories were won by manueverability. Attack one phalanx each or keep them distracted with Auxilaries, if you have them. Just keep trying to get your cavalry or legionary units to get behind or on the side, or if lucky, surround them. Its the only way in the feild.

also, make the phalanxes tire out, make them come to you, use ur cohorts as missile units as u use light mobile units to chase them around, and try to hit them in the rear with missile fire, that can decimate them in seconds

have a look here, its a walkthrough I did of how to wipe out hoplites with roman troops.

Basically sumarised as, pin them from the front with a few troops, then hit them from the sides and rear with everyone else

Concentrate missile fire on their General unit/Captain. You will be surprised how much effect on morale this has on their units. Historically speaking though legions has comparatively easy against the Greeks/Macedon’s when compared to their battles against Barbarian tribes. Really only Phyrrus was able to defeat the Romans (and maybe the King of Pontus during Trajan’s time) but that was down to his elephants not his hoplites but once the Romans worked out how to deal with the elephants their fortunes turned for the better.

Anyway back to game, kill the general, use cavalry to attack the rears and sides. Move your archers and slingers around the back of phalanx units were they will be 2/3 times more effective. Oh and remember to use the shield wall.

If possible, call in Air support (don´t know which freakin mod probably installed) ... (just kidding)

Use cheap troops to harass and distract them, pepper them with missile troops and then let your heavy grunts do the work. Use two units on each phalanx, one to pin them and the one heavy infantry unit to flank them. Probably you will not have a 2:1 numerical superiority, but this 2:1 only matters with the phalanx just attacked - pick them one by one.

If you have weak infantry, I don't recommend attacking them frontally. Use a unit of light cavalry as a bait. On phalanx unit will pursuit the cavalry, and their line will break. Once their line is broken, victory will be yours.

Yea thats what I do, disrupt their line and then swamp the unit that is left vulnerable.

I have one strategy against those Hoplites(this do not work against Spartans). This strategy however can be done easily but its stupid and there's a 50% chance that you will lose. Anyway, just charge in front of them, first use your cohorts then a good cavalry charge would cause enough casualties for them to lose morale then you wipe them out and win the battle. This has cost me alot of resources but that's the strategy I used against factions who owns a spearmen and I won against all of them against all odds. lol

50% chance, ey? Either it works or it doesn't?
I believe the chance of this "strategy" succeeding would differ from each battle.

lol, thats true, win or lose, not gray area, i'm usually fighting romans with hoplites, and i always form a good line flanked with cavalry and sometimes heavy peltast, with peltast and archers in front then pull them back pen the infantry with my hoplites prevent anything from flanking me and then when i've beat all their flanking units i use a counter charge with my cavalry then have light cavalry and peltast run them down

Hire mercenary hoplites to hold the enemy while your legions slip around the flanks.

Attack their flanks and focus on taking out their missle units, because the more infantry the easier it is to fight hoplites. So get a few units of cavalry, and make them attack the enemy missle units, then engage the hoplites, and make sure that you send your archers around the back to kill off all of their troops, then once one flank starts to run, chase them and kill them with your general, so they know who they are dealing with. So once a flank falls, take the infantry from there and begin to circle the enemy so that you can easily destroy them.

Dont just charge them frontally....if your severely outnumbered (ie 10:1....you having 100 troops) run away and save your troops.
But my tactic against hoplites is to tie them down with whatever infantry youve got (with your general behind the infantry to raise morale).
Then use your lighter troops/missile units, flank them and fire/attack their rear, when they start to waver burst your general through their centre and BAM....youve got yourself a classic RTW chain rout.
