Install fine, but crashes immediately

Hello techies, I need some darn help here. I recently bought a new computer and I'm trying to install M2TW on my machine. It installed perfectly. Like it always does. I installed all the versions(the original m2tw and hen the 4 xpacs).

Anyways, when I open the launcher and select any of the games, I am shown the little disc symbol for my icon for a few seconds, then I see a window pop up and vanish in a flash. Then nothing. Im just sitting on desk top. I have the newest video drivers. I tried downloading the 1.5 patch but it says it couldnt update on the 4 expac versions.

Please help. I love my M2tw. Having a new computer that can't run it is like getting a new car that only your gf can use.

Oh, i should note I have windows XP. I'm not sure if that helps you.

Try reinstalling. If it can't inall the 1.5 patch, the Kingdoms install did not work.

XP has no problems with Medieval2.

I'm assuming you installed the 1.1 patch. That patch has proven to be a problem in the past. Reinstall the game and start with the 1.2 path instead - forgo the 1.1 patch altogether. The patching scheme for this game is very arcane to say the least....

Update: I wiped M2tw from my machine, then re-installed it. I took the above advice and downloaded patch 1.2. When i executed the patch 1.2 it said that the game was already updated to version 1.03.0000. At this point I downloaded patch 1.5, it updated normally. Once again whenever I start the game my icon switches to the little cd and then a window opens and shuts in a blink of an eye leaving me sitting on desktop.

I have a buddy who knows a bit more about computers than I do and he wanted me to ask if going from an older cd drive to a new SATA cd drive would change anything?

Once again i'm left to plead for help into the void that is the internet.

Sorry I didn't see this update before.

Check out what I highlighted above. This usually makes me think the uninstaller is not properly clearing the Registry and leaving keys behind. Try the following method to uninstall and then try a fresh re-install afterward: http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/24456

Make a restore point beforehand just in case you screw something up unintentionally. Good luck!

Well i did what the link showed, but to no avail. Upon reloading the game on my machine after clearing out the registry and the files that WERE left behind the same issue is happening. The game just runs a small window for a split second and closes.

Do you guys think buying a new copy of the game would help anything? The disc is not in pristine condition, its got a few minor scratches.
I don't know what to do here.

This thing does not what a SATA drive is. Try an old IDE one.

I'll have to disagree with irishron here. A SATA drive should be able to read that disc perfectly. As far as I can tell there was a window when newer blu-ray and SATA drives would reject the dual-layer discs but it seems that most of those problems have been ironed out in recent drivers and newer drives. But I won't claim to be sure....

Just how old is the drive you're using at the moment? Have you upgraded the drivers/firmware?

Also, when you uninstalled M2 did you run a registry cleaner? The uninstaller for M2 gave me fits in the past - maybe there's your problem? Good luck!

The reason I say it was the first SATA drive to show up in these forums did exactly what he described.

Polecat is right about newer drives but as old as the format these didcs made, I would not hold my breath. Some are still giving people fits.

And Polecat is right about unistalling and reinstalling this game; a good registry cleaner is a must.

This sata drive is right out of the unopened box as of like 5 days ago. As far as to how long the manufacturer held on to it, I could not tell you.

I did not use a registry cleaner. I just used the remove programs function in the control panel. A link to an easy to use registry cleaner would be fantastic. Thanks for your on going help gentlemen. It means a lot.

Alright. Uninstalled the game again, then cleared registry. Reinstalled then updated to 1.5. Once again, same bug where after loading the launcher and selecting game the window pops up and closes in a flash.
I think it might be time to bribe my brother who is a techie to put my old dvd drive on this machine too(an IDE drive I think someone called it?).

ANNNND no go. Wow, life sure does hate me lately. Put in the old drive i used to play it with, with the IDE ribbon connection, drive works fine, but game does the same thing.

What kind of shape is the disc in? Any scratches, dirt, fingerprints, leftover pizza?

Near perfect. It's worked for years, i played using this disc on my old computer not more than a week ago right before i built my new computer.

Would having my desktop resolution be causing the game to not open maybe? I'm plum out of ideas.

Could be. One way to find out is set it to 1024 x 768. Be sure it's 32bit.
