    Icon4 Unrealistic Blood Spray/"Puff"

    Hi all,

I've noticed from watching quite a few preview videos that when soldiers are hit by arrows or musket fire there are "sprays" of blood around the person hit. Its a bit like in MTW2. Personally I think its highly unrealistic and looks poorly made (if you look carefully the spray doesn't even seem to come from the body).

You can see what I mean from this video 0:30 - 1:35: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfCPU...eature=related
EDIT: Here is another video I found with clearer examples: watch out for dark "puffs" from 3:50 onwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwjyV8CefGQ

I hope there is an option to turn it off without turning off a lot of other features. What are you views?

I was sure that it was stated that there would be no blood in the game? If there is, post the video your talking about?

EDIT: ah, just fully read your post

They have stated several times in different places that there is no blood in the game. So whatever you are seeing is not blood.

That would be assuming that S2 will be more moddable than any past TW game as no one has ever been able to implement a blood mod for melee combat in any TW game. But I guess we can always hope.

Doubt its doing anything more than altering textures.

This is has been talked about on here many a times.

And to a further extent there was that awesome Dismemberment mod as well assuming you could get it running. But still Medieval 2 was the goriest of all the games, and with mods even moreso.

Unfortunately though mods would only be able to add blood to projectile hits, not the melee. So though that's fine in ETW/NTW, it will lose it's effect really in S2TW given the higher frequency of melee

@OP, I guess it must be smoke that you're referring to.

I do believe that there will be a blood mod quite soon after release though

    At least I'm hoping...

Dont worry, there wont be any unrealistic blood, only it will be even more unrealistic with no blood whatsoever.

I dont believe there will be a blood mod. Have you ever seen a blood mod for melee in TW? No. Its too difficult to mod.

For God's sake CA, this is 'Total War' and that involves blood! Couldn't you at least make some blood spatter textures for wounded soldiers (like Burrek's textures for MTW2)? It's not a child's game, so why shouldn't there be blood? Anyway, even if children do play it, they also play Call of Duty and not only is there blood in that, there's also dismemberment and in full in your face 3D.

Burrek's textures (at least I think that's what the dev. was called) were a good compromise, as whenever anyone got injured, they had blood spattered on their armour. It looked realistic without being overly gruesome.

I don't understand what the obsession over blood is. Have any of you ever actually seen what a stab/slash wound does?? In my line of work I've been stabbed multiple times, there were no blood spurts everywhere. I've been in riots that should be implemented into medieval war movies, but alas there were no sprays of blood or internal organs flailing about. People make out melee combat to be far more gory than it is, and the Hollywood/video game depictions of such are prime examples of gory and unrealistic and no where near as terrifying as the real thing. I can do without blood in a strategy game. It does nothing to Immerse me. Adding blood will do nothing to make it realistic.
So you reckon that if a warrior has his head hacked off by a Samurai, there won't be any blood? The blood stops pumping through the veins when the head's removed (or any other limb), does it? Sure, maybe you've been in riots and so on, but people weren't lopping each other's limbs off, were they? The battles depicted in TW cannot in any way shape or form be compared to a 'riot'.

I've seen plenty of cuts and gashes, with quite a bit of blood coming out. I personally dont think there needs to be obscene amounts of blood, just some type of blood, and yes it would make it more realistic. People do bleed and comparing one extreme to the other is jut an easy way of arguing about something for those who are unable to make any meaningful contributions to such a discussion.
Exactly! Some type of indication that the guy has actually been wounded!
Do you think hardcore blood effects would slow the game down dramatically?
Yep, but adding some blood spatter to textures when wounds are inflicted shouldn't make too much of a performance hit.

I'm referring to general wounds as no TW has ever had Limbs or appendages lopped off. And no, they weren't having limbs cut off... well some fingers... But I think A knife entering the back of a mans skull and protruding his face just below his eye is as graphic as it gets... there was no blood, and he was instantly turned into a vegetable.

Well, that's another thing a game such as TW should have - dismemberment, because it sure as hell happened in real life. I can understand why there isn't, as it would bring the game to a shuddering halt, but some sort of blood spatter texture wouldn't.

You think that unrealistic? If I want blood in this game, it have to be done Turok or Kill Bill style.

Like every melee hit want make the enemy gush blood out of every successful strike then there will be a pool of blood after that.

or you want it doom style and have the samuria have his guts spill out when he dies.

I'm ok with the no blood thing in Shogun 2 Total War. It just mean we will have bigger age range of players playing this game.
You know that you play too much Total War when you declare war in Monoploy after a player make the most rip off deal ever. If an AI offer me a deal of trading 2 of my cities for one of there and I also have to pay a heavy fee then the AI must be on a deathwish.

Personally any type of blood would be better than no blood. I dont care if its gushing out or not, even if it was very minimal it would still better than no blood at all. Especially the dead bodies on the ground, even if their textures changed and got a bit bloodied looking.

I mean how can you even have a game with samurai's and ninjas and not have any blood?

Perhaps you'll see it better in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwjyV8CefGQ

Look from 3:40 onwards. During the cav charge and in melee you see lots of dark "puffs" when the men are hit by arrows or bullets.

Whatever they are, it doesn't look at all realistic, immersion ruiner for me.

I never expected seeing blood on the ground or chopped pieces of dead people in TW, its just not the style. I was pretty surprised to see blood mist and stains when M2TW came out, so i'll be content with projectile blood.
