I am playing IBFD 7.4 right now.
The thing i dont understand is what is alliance stands for?
I play ERE and declare war against sassands, but my ally won't assist me in the war.
is this a bug? how to make an ally to help you against other factions?

It doesn't work that way in rtw.
You could request them to attack a faction, but they'll never accept. Even if they're already at war with that faction. And if they accept, they will never keep their peomises.
In general, allies will just wait till you're commited and backstab you. So no point in alliances. That's a bug in the game itself, not IB.
Really? That sucks
but as far as i remember, few years back when i was playing ibfd 6 I did make a alliance with an arabic faction on the south between ERE and Sassands, and they did assist me against them. just right after i attack sassands city, that arabic faction just declare war on them
it is quite stable for mebut thanks
are there any sub mods out there can actually make allies useful?
What about using the forced diplomacy mod?
What difference will it make? The AI will still attack you.
THe only way of keeping your allies from backstabbing you is keeping a large military presence in the area. Face it - diplomacy doesn't work in rtw.
I used trying to play strategically too, but in the end it always just comes down to spamming stacks faster than your enemy (everyone else).
I've rarely used it but can't you force the AI faction to ally with you or accept a ceasefire? Sure they might attack again next turn but just 'ally' with them again in a historical manner, as it were. I agree the RTW engine limits the whole AI ally thing but force diplomacy at least allows a player the option of controlling some of its actions.
The AI will always attack next turn. It's better to just prepare your economy in the first few turns, and then churn out unit after unit, army after army at full capacity. No point in alliances, as the AI is programmed not to pursue victory conditiond, but trouble the human as much as possible. Too bad it interferes with natural expansion, making the campaigns much easier. The AI will just spam and then sacrafice itself for no purpose, instead of expanding and accumulating resources.
But i hope at least they can make an ally declare war against my enemy when i declare war on them
otherwise what is the difference between alliance and neutral?
