    Icon4 Soundcard problem? Games commonly freeze!

    This problem I have with my sound skipping in game and my entire computer freezing has persisted a lot latley. First of all my comp is a piece of junk and I dream of a day when I will be able to play the best PC games. Currently I play Red Orchestra (hardly ever now since Im banned on most servers), Forgotten hope 1 mod for BF 1942 and Command and conquer 3 Kanes wrath, those are the games I mostly play right now. On both RO and FH I get very bad sound, I commonly hear it skipping and there are a lot of crackles. In both those games sometimes It would freeze suddenly with looping sound and I would have to restart my computer. This has never happened in Kanes Wrath but it did the last 2 games I played! They were some epic battles, Tons of units on screen I was really getting into it and it froze! I was RAGING.

    Im thinking I need a new sound card, But am I right to assume this is a sound card problem? Im pretty sure it is, ever since my onboard motherboard sound failed my dad got me a new soundcard, a piece of junk one.

    Sound skipping could be a symptom of the problem but not the root cause of your problem. There are other factors that could be causing your freezes like memory lockups, heat related issues, severe disk fragmentation, etc. Drop your DxDiag log on us and maybe someone here will see something that points to the problem.     Here's a suggestion you may not understand at first - unplug that system from the Internet and see if the performance improves.

    As an aside, any reason you were banned from Red Orchestra servers in the first place?

    Any cheap soundcard you upgrade to is going to have about the same audio quality as the onboard audio these days. Pentium 4 is old, I'd look at upgrading your system. That said, the 9800GT is still a decent card, so you wouldn't have to worry about that.

    Also, Tiger Direct sucks, use NCIX.

    I had a lot of these issues when I had a nvidia 8800 gt. Didn't matter what sound device I used. (I had plantronics HS and a external SB).

    I had some major issues with Dragon age doing this and I never was able to get SC2 to work without a freeze a few minutes in.

    New rig now, no problems.
