Default fire and advance tactics in single player?

I'm seriously starting to woder about fire and advance. When you use it your range is smaller, and most of the time the enemy will just sit out of your range and fire and you, forcing you to either take a pounding and break formation. And when you finally move forward to bring them into range, they just chargem making the drill completely useless.

Does anyone know any good tactics to use with fire and advance?

I pretty much only use it if I send a line infantry unit to face an enemy line unit 1 vs 1. Using fire and advance speeds up the rate of fire, although you will eat a volley getting into range.

I find fire and advance best used with units who have high charge and melee stats (42nd Foot for example). It's about timing though, make sure your unit is in FaA formation before entering the enemies range to improve the chances of having first volley.

It is extremely useful to shock enemies who are low on morale into routing.

One tactic i have found is to turn on fire and advance and let your unit advance. it will slowly break enemy morale. then charge them when they are really close.
