SO, in my Great Britain campaign, first thing I did was to give Gibraltar to Portugal (for money, of course). I just feel that it costs way too much to defend, and is hinders more than it helps.
So, about 15 turns later, I took Palma, in the Balaeric Isles, which I think is a much better base.

So guys, I want your opinion, which is a better naval base: Gibraltar or Palma?

Palma is more useful as a general naval base for the Mediterranean but Gibraltar is better for controlling access to and from the Atlantic. A fleet in the port at Gibraltar can choose to intercept anything passing through the straights (but is essentially immune from direct attack from the sea so you can pick and choose which battles to accept). As a general military base, Gibraltar is better. You can use it for quick hit-n-run attacks on the southern Spanish towns and ports and as a starting point for the invasion of Spain itself.

Playing as GB, I usually try to keep Gibraltar. If I can, I make peace with Spain at the start - it usually doesn't last but buys enough time to build a fort, train some local troops and ship some artillery down from London. The trick is to keep the force small enough that the Spanish assault the fort (rather than starving you into submission) but large enough to win the resulting battle. Also, when eventually at war with Spain, I drop a small (1 light dragoons) force in the north of Spain to draw away one or more armies so that Gibraltar is not overwhelmed immediately by multiple armies. That said, I usually capture Palma too as soon as possible - as mentioned, it rarely gets attacked by the CAI.

palma u may not be invaded but yer naval advantages deminishes, but in gibralter u can render ALL southern/arab/mediterrain ivasions north useless, the only problem with that is u need good relations with the spaniards and portugese...but hey u have an ability to have a strong trade spot in gibralter or render any all invasions north useless with a navy that can surely rival that of the queens navy ...but my choice lies with gibralter

up to hard/hard you can hold gibraltar indefinitely with a full stack army led by a good general, even when you're at war with the spanish. Even more if you have a good spy that you can hold in Madrid depleting their units production.
The biggest problem is in the british AI, that doesn't make even an effort to hold gibraltar, not to mention to build a port there. Which obviously changes the course of historical facts radically.

In my latest campaign the spanish got gibraltar from britain in the first few turns then I (prussian) took it back to reestablish coalition power in the med. I managed to easily defend them since. I get a full stack spanish army attacking me every few turns, but with two spyes in madrid burning the city over and over, it's just fun to see them try.

Palma is useful but I think Gibraltar is better for control. It can choose to intercept anything by pass through the straights.
