    Default A small problem...

I don't know if anyone has noticed this but...

In Napoleon TW on the europe campaign map, you can move across france in 3 turns, which is 6 weeks. Now, if you've played rome total war, it takes about 5 or more turns to get across ( i havn't played it in a long while tho) which is 2 and a half years.
NOW: in shogun 2, the map of japan, width wise, will be about the length of france, yet you won't be going across it in 3 turns, even tho 1 turn will be 3 monthes! So... whats going on with that?

I'm not too bothered about this, i'm happy wiht the campaign, and mpc on napoleon, so plzz don't flame

In the total war series, the rate of travel has always been decided by game play considerations rather than realism. There's never been an attempt to make the games consistent between titles either, so rates of travel don't match up between ETW and NTW any more than they do from NTW to TWS2. The only reason for it to be a problem is if the rate of travel is too quick or slow for the particular game, which would affect the game balance.

also you could take into consideration that in the 19th century road surfaces and designs were much more sophisticated than in previous eras

NTW has perhaps the most real-to-life movement capabilities, imo. The Napoleonic Wars were wars of maneuver, every army covered mind-numbing distances on campaigns, especially the French.

    Blucher's Prussians covered 190 miles in 25 days (7.5 miles/day).
    Schwarzenberg's Austrians and Bavarians marched 125 miles in 28 days (4.5 m/day)
Allies' marches were not too impressive due to winter blizzards, ice, and sieges.
The poorly clothed and hungry French troops managed to march (8 miles/day) .
The Old Guard covered 200 miles in 15 days (13.5 miles/day).
Averages from 1812, OBVIOUSLY, NTWs march distances are a bit more impressive (you're able to march halfway through France in a turn if you're on good roads in game), but they capture the spirit of movement well enough, imo. These distances aren't too impressive to a modern military man, and 4 miles a day in a combat zone is considered par for the course for a modern day unit, but again you need to take it into context of the period, what they had to transport their men (the answer is their own two feet, wot!). Asides from marching on foot with packs, you have to remember there was artillery trains, baggage trains, etc. These were pulled by horses who had to be cared for as well as the men.

Nowadays if a AFV or a Transport Truck bite the big one its a matter of hours at most to either get it back in working order or to have a replacement brought forward, not always the case in the 19th century when a horse or other beast of burden bought the farm. You can't repair a corpse, only replace it.
