    Default The Byzantine Problem

The Byzantine Faction is waaay over powered. Like they take up half the map in every campainge. Weren't they a dying empire with obsolete warfare methods? It's ridiculous that all these peasent militas with leather and scale armour and primative spears and hatchets are a match for the steel legions of knights that western europe uses in the late period. there needs to be some serious editing.

It's funny, I've only played 2 6.4 campaigns, Aragon and Crusader* States, but they've gone extinct really quickly in both...100% without my doing.

At the beginning of the game they still field an extremely disciplined, advanced army. It isn't until later that their army will be outdated. I think this has been brought up before, and many SS folk said that later in the game you'll begin to notice their decline. I haven't really dabbled much with the later campaign, so I don't know personally.

Edit: Nevermind - Newt got to it first.

yeah true in teh late era campaign the byzantine roster starts to show its ''age'' when most units start to get more advanced with heavier and better in the west and east . Still they are formidable oppoments. Makes up for a ''survival'' question for your faction

Is it only an early campaign problem? Both of my campaigns have been late era.

This is a simple thread, for which there is a simple answer. Byzantines rock until 1350 (they should!). After 1350 the Byzzies are OK. After 1450 the Byzantines are up against the ropes.

The Byzantines should start out as one of the most powerful factions, if not as the most powerful faction. However, they had many powerful enemies to the east, who were able to keep them busy (preventing expansion) then eventually overcome them.
If the Byzantines are able to defeat the East, they should be a superpower. If they are not able to defeat the East, they die. If they get locked in a stalemate with the East, then they will slowly become outdated until they are no longer to face their more advanced foes.

    That's....kinda freaky!

Have yet to see a game where the Arabs don't reach powerhouse status.

Really? I linked my CS campaign in one thread...there are no Muslim factions left

Edit - Actually, it looks like the Moors still have Marrakesh and a few surrounding provinces...but it is a far cry from domination.

They're kinda hard until you get some 1300+ units, then they suffer.

i think the problem is that theres this mentallity that mtwII is a sequal to roman total war. so they make they byzantines way too strong for their little "neo roman empire" canpaings

Byzantines steamroll the turks and hungarians by turn 100 in all my campaigns, no matter what I do, even if I fund hungary or the turks its just delaying the inevitable, and guys, by the time you get 1300+ units the Byzantines are a giant blob and it doesnt matter how good your troops are, because you will just be buried beneath a mountain of Byzantine corpses.

Cassius: "Our men at arms have secured the city. We've received representatives from all the best elements. The senate is with us, the knights are with us."
Brutus:"The pontifs, the urban cohorts, the lictors guild..."
Antony: "Oh, the lictors guild, very good. Only rally the bakers and the flute players and you can put on a festival."
