    Icon14 Playing Shogun/Medieval on GTX460

Last week I've changed my GF8600 to GTX460 and I've downloaded the latest nVidia drivers 266.58_desktop_winxp_32bit. It appears that sth from those two (graphics card / drivers) managed to cure Shogun and Medieval because I now can play those two games again after so many years. The problem with the inability to control the troops has gone completely. The battles are playable and enjoyable again! (there is however slight lag in Medieval but I don't care about it). I reckon that the drivers are the cure we all were looking for but I may be wrong (maybe the card itself has sth to do with it too...I'm no expert at this). I've also used the compatibility mode (win98) just in case.

So, try it if you can and write down if you were succesful or not.

I think it's because of graphic card, on 8 and 9 series game is broken, but later cards are ok.
Also this "patch" fix many CTD problems.
Sorry for my bad english , I don't mind correcting!

They where not broken ...their drivers simply did not supported the old shaders anymore used by MTW ...was not a problem on the campaign board but it caused CTD on loading battles...I dont think that Nvidia actually planned this, its just they thought it was not needed to support the old graphics anymore...
apparently this has been reverted with more current graphic cards..

Yes, I know it isn't broken literally, it was just mental leap with use of foreign language

Who cares really! We can play those games once more and that's important

I came close but my NVIDIA 9800 GT updated to 260.99 got me to the battle screen but all I could do was make paint swishes with the mouse. I will keep trying. maybe some day.

Perhaps try the driver version that the OP was referring to?

    Windows XP 32 bit

    Other OS/Arch: http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk

It might be worth a shot.

To be honest I don't know what made possible to play those games : new drivers or the card itself or the combination of both.

It's card, but drivers help with CTD. Although I play on 6600gt(change from 8600) with almost newest drivers and game works fine.

What makes you think it's the card and that drivers help? As far as I know it's the card and that's it. The 8xxx and 9xxx cards just don't work correctly. I think the 8800 cards might be ok with the oldest drivers, but more people need to confirm this.

IIRC long time ago I had problems with game on newst drivers(that time) and after installing new ones game worked fine.
But it's about other cards than gf 8 and 9.

I've seen this problem (inability to direct units in battle) on a 7 series card on a newer driver. The consensus has always been that it's the card, but if the 8800 can be gotten to work with an older driver and the 7 series can be affected using a newer one, then it does point to a driver file being the culprit rather than the cards themselves.

I didn't know about gf 7 cards, too. With that facts I think you're right in this. But I don't think that Nvidia do anything with this, who cares about some old games...
