Default Installation disks. Could it be the problem?

Ok so i always get some random unspecified error game crashes when playing ANY version of SS.
Some times it will be on the battle map but it will surely happen right after the end of a battle when i press 'OK'' in the battle scroll.

I have done everything in the book and everything not included into it to see over the problems. Hell even a entire pc format didnt help.
    Using: Win7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Core 2 Qaud Q8200 @2.7 GHz (stock 2.33)
ATI Radeon MSI 5770R HAWK graphics card
    ASUS P5N-D motherboard
    Kingston DDR-2 4GB RAM
gaming at a 21.5 inc monitor at 1920x1080 resolution.

I beleive my computer is more than capable of playing the game. So like i said i have tried anything i have read in these forums and none helped.

The only things i can think of doing now are: (1) Change OS to something like Vista/XP and try there.
    (2) Play vanilla games and see if those have the same error in which case i beleive its the instalation disks of the game which i have since the games came out and i admit they are not in the best of conditions after all these years
    (3) Swap graphics cards in case of some random ATI/Nvidia chipset mobo/Medeival game incopatibility.
    (4) Buy the golden edition of the game ( its just 10 euros so no big deal at all) and see if theres any difference.

Those are my options right now. At least those are the tings i havent tried yet. Any suggestion/idea would be extremely helpfull.

I love the SS ( the mod ofc ) and i dont want to just quit on it. Especially now that im goingto the army and in my few precious leaves i will need somedecent entertainment when im back home

looking forward to your replies. for now i will start playing some vanilla Med2 games

We have a bug reports forum. But, reduce overclock to stock, or run a 24 hour stress test.

I'm also getting lots of unspecified error crashes, and my CPU is also overclocked (E4500 at 3.12ghz from stock 2.2ghz), so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with overclocking.
Still, I personally don't mind (whenever my game crashes I gnash my teeth for a while, then decide whether to call it a day or repeat, say the battle I was fighting earlier).

on a slightly related note: you could try replacing your CPU cooling fan, just in case you're still using a stock cooler. higher CPU temperatures during operating seem to increase the probability of running into mathematical errrors (hence the crash).

Just use this, run it for at least 24 hours. It monitors temps also. make sure it's below 70c

    Or revert to stock.

well thats the problem with me as well. I get an unspecified error in the campaign map always when its another fanction's turn to play ussually the rebels. If i start the game again campaign goes on normally till the next crash which can vary between 5 turns....to 35. Its completey random most of the times. But i just cant finish any campaign battles. When the battle result scroll appears if i press ok game crashes again and the same happens no matter how many times i play the battle.

Guess reverting back to stock clocks on both the graphics card and the cpu is something i can try but i doubt it will make any difference since all my other games run great.

As for my temps im idleing at 35-36c and never go above 45-50 on full load

Yeah, but have you stressed it for that long to see if it's stable? I had a stable overcock for months and then it just started crashing randomly. Then I set it to stock and it's been working fine since. Never figured out what was going on with that.

honestly no i havent. Anyway reverted back to stock ill run SS again and see how it goes.

Ill continue my current campaign and wait for a campaign map crash first. if it happens i will post the system log. If not.......im gonna jump out of the window after i move the car away from the impact zone

    Demonlord,

These crashes are they on the campaign map or battle?

    Where have you installed SS?

What version of DirectX do you have installed?

What driver version on your ATI card?

The crashes happen at BOTH the campaign map and the battles

campaign crash: After i press end button it will crash with an unspecified error during another fanction's turn 95% of the time being the rebels.

Battle crash: Happens after the battle is over and the result scroll is up. when i press ok it crashes with an unspecified error instead of going into loading screen to return to the campaign map

My SS is installed in the program files. I tried installing the game outside the program files ( Somewhere into the users folder) but still same errors

Dirextx version is 11 ( DX11) since my card can utilise that directx version. I tried reinstalling DX9 but it said i couldnt due to a newer version already installed

Driver version on the 5770 is the 10.12 version. I reverted back to them from the newer 11.1 version due to some desktop bugs i had with it

Im gonna point it one more time I have tried alot of clean installs of the game to make it work. At some point i was forced to delete everything in my HD due to a virus and reinstall everything ( OS, files, games etc) from scratch. I still had the same errors with the game. So in my opinion it could be one of the reasons i posted in my first post in this thread or my overclock which im putting to the test now since i reverted back to stock clocks on everything.

EDIT: i had a crash while looking at the info of some mercenary crossbowmen again with an unspecified error. i kept a backup of the system log i can post it later. Campaign continued normally after that. After that i had a very small battle ( general's bodyguard vs a polish general's bodyguard) and i didnt had teh end battle crash. could be due to the size of the battle though

    DemonLord,

Have you installed in Program Files or elsewhere?

Interesting that you use ATI 5770, I do as well, but on installation of DX9, it did not even query it for me.

I also have my SS installed on Ext HD, I believe this is why I have so few troubles.

    Edit:

I installed DX9 from here, kindly provided by Bane-TW

Hmm, crashes due to looking at unit info usually happened on 6.3. Since I installed 6.4 I've not had this problem.

@ Navajo: i currently have it installed inside program files. i dont have an external HD so that option is not available to me.

@newt: Again that is my bad i reverted back to 6.3 cause in 6.4 i have all these problems+ i cant play custom battles. everytime i pressed ''deployment'' in 6.4 i would get a crash at a custom battle

Also. I played a serious battle this time. 1700 jerries (me) againist 2800 brits. i won and then i pressed ok in the result scroll to go back into the campaign map.....and yup you guessed right ''unspecified error'' crash im attaching the log

Well, since we can rule out your overclock, have you done this, and then installed SS?
You should install SS as admin, and run SS_setup as admin, after following instructions in that link.

Easiest thing to do is install M2 in a different folder outside program files. Program files is not mod friendly

    DemonLord,

I fully endorse all that newt is advising, however please can you confirm that you have tried to install DX9 from the link I provided?

i guess i will make a back-up of my save game ( i kinda liked that hre campaign ) and reinstall the whole thing from scratch.....again. BTW that virtual store thing......i cant find it. Im looking in the right folder but i just cant find it. I looked into the sounds folder in SS6.3 mod folder and the sounds are there. Kinda of weird. anyway i will reinstall the whole thing again in my C/USERS/*my name* folder and see how it goes.

navajo i dld the file you sended but it was the same outcome. i had either a newer or equilivant version of directx
Once i reinstall the game i will install directx through the disk

But leave "protected operating system files" checked. You don't need to be messing with those.

BTW i will try my disk theory. I have 2 more computers i can install the game into so im gonna try it on different machines and see if i will still get the problem. if i get the same results on all 3 computers i think i will go spend meself 10 euros to get the golden version Brand new disk so hopefully better results. I mean sometimes i even have problems installing the ME2 updates cause of ''files missiing'' so it cant be random

If they use Win & or Vista, don't use program files folder.

ok so i tried the game in the worst of the computers i could try it at. So far and due to its pc turtle like speed i only got 33 turns of campaign in 1.5 hour
Playing as norway M/M Difficulty only submod being FTT 3.1 ( which didnt help at all lol) in the early era.

I can safely say my theory of faulty installation disks is crambling since i played 3 large scale battles with no errors and i also had no error in the campaign map so far. which is not good i still have one more computer to try but i already feel like im back to square 0 sooooo HELP

Test pc specs: Dual core Celeron processor at 2.1 Ghz
    2GB RAM
    ATI Radeon 5670
some random ASUS cheap mobo which name is escaping me now
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
