    Villar-Perosa - Italian

    Beretta Model 1918 - Italian

    Beretta Semiautomatic Carbine 1918

    Bergmann MP18 w/Snail mag

Germany used heavy barrelled "Artillery" model Lugar P08's with snail magazines in the SMG role.

Ontop of this Germany, (and some British officers, Churchill and L of Arabia included) used the Mauser C96. With a stock and the option of a longer barrel as a carbine, the M712 "Schnellfeuer was automatic. Germany commonly used the "Red 9" variant as a substitute for the slow to produce Luger. It was named the Red 9 as it had a red 9 imprinted on the grip to remind users that unlike many 7.63mm firing variants, the Red 9 fired 9x19 parabullem ammunition.

You can also add the Thompson, the best one to use would be the M1921 model, the earliest. It would have made it in service by 1918 but in 1917 development was held back.

Quite a few SMGs back in the day had similar designs.

Not a submachine gun, but some Springfields used by the Americans had a special magazine that could be attached. The magazine held pistol ammo and could be used in semi-auto mode close up, but was very innaccurate.

Pedersen device. was a pretty interesting idea. Not sure it ever entered service however, production started around the time the BAR entered service, probably what killed it. Fun Fact, Officially a Springfield with a Pedersen device is officially designated as a pistol.

There were semi auto/auto rifles around in this time, I believe the Mondragon rifle is an example. I seem to remember reading how German aircrew would use those to shoot other planes with, before the interrupter gear of course. And, technically, the BAR. There was also a beltfed Thompson variant and the Thompson Autorifle

The US used a mixture of Light Machine guns or Sub Machine guns when they entered the war. Initially they were issued the French Chauchat gun which had many difficulties, they traded that in for Lewis Light Machine Guns and ultimately ended the war with Browning automatic Rifles. These would have filled the role of a sub machine gun when it came to British, French, and American forces as they were moble and not tripod based. Unfortunately the allies other then Italy really didn't have a sub Machine Gun in the sense that we think of them today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browning_Automatic_Rifle

    Chauchat Submachine gun

    Lewis Machine gun

Lewis Guns were also used early on as weapons for Fighters but were replaced with heavier guns and belt fed machine guns since their was no easy way for pilots to easily change the drum in flight or during combat.

as far as i know the MP18 was the only SMG fielded in any significant number, used by stormtroopers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submach...entury_to_1920 "The Italians developed the Villar Perosa, introducing it in 1915. It fired pistol calibre 9 mm Glisenti ammunition, but wasn't a submachine gun in the sense that the weapon type would later be defined, as it couldn't be fired from shoulder and without support. Originally developed as an aircraft weapon, it also saw some use by infantry as a light machine gun. This odd design was eventually modified to become a traditional submachine gun, the OVP 1918 that evolved into the Beretta 1918 after the end of WW1 . However, the Bergmann MP18 is the first true submachine gun and had been used intensively starting with Operation Michael in March 1918." Any other SMGs were i believe too rare to be able to make an appearance in this mod in units of more than five or so soldiers, not enough to be able to achieve much at all ingame.

Remember though that this is Total War, SMG's could be developed earlier or the war lasts longer on the campaign.
