I am new to M2TW. That said, I think SS looks interesting. Having not yet played, would I be better served starting with vanilla or starting with SS?

Yeah, go straight to SS! Also you might want to try Broken crescent too. Those two by are far the best mods for mtw2, imho.
Start a vanilla campaign. Listen to the advisor tutorials, just to grab a basic concept of what screens do what and some of the general mechanics. This mod also requires the M2TW: Kingdoms xpac. So if you purchased just he basic M2TW you will need to 'aquire' the Kingdoms expansion.
Play a few turns in and attack a rebel settlement to listen to the advisor and what he has to say about the RTS aspect of the game. Most mods omit the Advisor as they have generally veteran TW players and commuinities.
If you are not new to the Total War franchise, I suggest going straight into this mod. The lack of an Advisor, or "tutorial" makes the learning curve very steep for a fresh TW player.
Thank you for the feedback. I have a clarifying question. Does SS preclude me from playing the campaigns included in the Kingdoms expansion pack?

The Baltic, British Ilse, Crusades, and Americas campaigns are pretty much MODs like SS here. Though SS takes the Kingdoms additions to the rosters and game mechanics and applies them to a more in depth Vanilla campaign setting.
If you open up your M2TW hard dirve directory, you will see the Kingdoms campaign's folders along with SS's. So you will be able to have a SS's campaign and still play the other campaign in the expansion.
TLDR: Yes you can play them![]()
Thank you for the clarification. I will start with SS rather than trying to play vanilla.

I have a second clarifying question. Based on the suggestion that I also play Broken Crescent, can I install both SS and Broken Crescent at the same time? Certainly, I would not play them at the same time. However, having everything installed so that I can choose which one to play would be convenient.

Yes you can. I have them both.
Thank you for addressing my final concern.

in my opinion, you should start out with M2tw vanilla first. learn the basics and start (and possibly finish) a short campaign and get comfortable, then begin with SS. not only will you understand the game, you will be even more overawed by SS when you play it after having only seen vanilla!
do leave your name if you give me rep. i may just return the favor. maybe.
please visit the Tale of the Week forum at: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=802 for brilliant writing, people, and brownies. with nuts, if you prefer.
I'd play Vanilla for a campaign and then SS, so you can appreciate the difference. I don't see why you would need to play an older version of SS. Read the RR and RC guides, too.
i tried 6.3, didnt like it compared to 5.1 specificly the unit roster and the new unit cards aswell as the inventions of the weapons-longbowmen,heavy infrantry etc
Any reason you're not using 6.1 or 6.2?
Definitely go for vanilla first - it will be challenging enough for your first game. Then later switch to SS, and you will be able to appreciate the many changes and refinements better.

The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.
