Default OT: Books/Authors Like George R.R. Martin and "A Song of Ice and Fire"

So, I did a couple searches and I didn't find any topic about this, but I was wondering something.

I assume we all downloaded this mod because we are avid fans of the books. Having read them, my taste in fantasy books has changed. There are few books that live up to Martin's example.

I've found a few books that I like that remind me of Martin and a few authors. I was wondering if we could share those authors and books so that we can continue reading exemplary fantasy and/or historical fiction (since Martin's world is essentially Medieval England with some references to the rest of the medieval world).

For one I have read R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series.
Pretty good read. A bit like Martin by doing POV chapters, but the story draws a lot from the Crusades.
I can explain it more in detail, if you want.

I started reading, but couldn't really get into Steven Eriksen's Malazan books.
I started with Gardens of the Moon, but if anyone has read any more of these, tell me which ones I ought to enjoy.

If you like historical fiction, I highly recommend Conn Iggulden's (might be one g) trilogy about Genghis Khan, starts with Genghis: Birth of An Empire (at least that's the American title).

Anything by Michael Curtis Ford has been excellent (also historical fiction).

And the Troy series by David Gemmell is fabulous, as well as his first book, Legend.

If you have any others, please share.

Try the "Lukien Trilogy" by John Marco. I'm reading it right now and I think it's awesome. Lots of battles with good perspective. With the battles in this book (A Song of Ice and Fire) you never know what happens until the end.

I'll try it. I'm actually out of books at the moment.

You see, I'm a History teacher (BS in History-Secondary Ed and an MA in History - thesis on the Nizari Isma'ilis, also known as the Assassins) and my wife is a librarian. We have a "small" library here.

But I've cleaned out our library and I'm out of stuff.

I'll definitely try it. If you like battles in detail, definitely read Michael Curtis Ford. I actually used his description of the Battle of Cunaxa (Xenophon and Cyrus versus Artixerxes in the 400s-300s BC) to help me create a battle diagram for one of my college Military History classes, and the professor asked how I was that accurate with it.

What is the plot of the Lukien Trilogy?

I'm currently reading the first book in this series. It is very good. Thanks for the recommendation.

Love affair with queen discovered= main character outlawed by the king he was once close to. Meets an old hero from his land and finds out he is fighting for an invading queen from the south.

That's just a bit though, because I don't want to spoil anything.

I'm still partial to Druss. Waylander is pretty awesome, but Druss is just so much badass wrapped in a mean little Scottish"y" package.

You have some good choices up there Troy is pretty good and if you like Conn Iggulden then i would also recommend the Emperor series about Julius Caesar. I also couldn't get through gardens of the moon but for historical fiction Bernard Cornwell has some great books especially the Saxon series and his aurthur one is good too. Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield about the battle of Thermopylae is one of my favorites. Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is a very different style but it's still very good. Nothing else really comes to mind at the moment but there is tons more.

I can recommend Robbin Hobb's series about an assassin's apprentice, I forgot the title of the series. Its a hole bunch of books like bricks but they're very good if you have the patience and time for them.

I would also like to recommend Pressfields' Gates of Fire. Really, really well written and believable too.

I've just started the Horus Heresy series, set in the Warhammer 40K Universe. I love WH40K lore, so I'm really looking forward to reading the books. Although, each book has a different author...so that might not be so good.

its surprisingly uniform considering theres been about 6 authors on it. I still think dan abnett writes best out of them all tho.
i do find the story moves pretty slow tho.

Ahh, right I'm only twenty pages or so into the first book, as I started today.

I finished A Feast for Crows a couple of days ago. Feels good to have caught up with everyone! Also great to know I won't come across any nasty spoilers too - like when Viserys turns into a Dragon!

I recommand Joe Abercrombie First Law series. It has several POV's and there's no real good or evil. (one POV is a ex-mercenary captain, one is an iquisitor(yea he tortures alot of "guilty suspects"), and another is a arrogant nobelman who thinks he's above the commons and you've several more.)

Joe Abercrombie is a great writer who focuses alot on characters and characters development.

Like Dux said: for viseral content go for Joe Abercrombie's trilogy, "the First Law". Bloody and disgusting, but interesting.

I'll be reading this list myself, if I get the time.

Yeah, when Daenerys brother turns into a dragon kind of lost it for me since I had already got that part spoiled for me. I don't think anyone really expected that stuff would come up as late as A Feast for Crows.
