Default SS Setup/Launcher Issue - CTD

First off. I'm new to using mods for Total War games. Longtime fan of the series however.

So...I installed 6.3 and it asked me about the submods and I choose the ones I wanted, then it went straight to the game.

It worked fine. So then I downloaded the 6.4.exe and installed it to the same directory as my ss6.3 was located.

When I click on the desktop icon for SS6.4 I get a loading screen on about 3/4 of my screen, and my cursor changes to a working cd, then the game disappears. I am running Windows 7.

So I went into the directory to make sure everything was where I thought it out to be and I found the ss setup file. Clicking on that, I thought I might have missed something, so after choosing Savage AI and Permanent Arrows I hit Early Era Campaign. I got the "working" text in the bottom, but I get a windows error message.

    It reads

"Error while trying to create a temporary file. Operation aborted."

When I hit start and exit I get the loading screen, then it crashes again.

In idiot speak (new to modding) what am I doing wrong?

I found the system.log.txt, but it was extremely long and is 5 MBs so I couldn't post it here.

My copy is free of Steam

    Where did you install it?

Just to save time doing things that work for some people and may not work for you, if you have it in program files, delete the SS folder and uninstall Medieval 2 and then delete the folder if it's still there.

Reinstall M2 somewhere else. I put mine in c:\games. Create a folder of your choosing. Then install SS. after installing 6.3, just choose any ai and leave the other options blank. Make sure to run setup again after installing 6.4, then choose any options you want.

I had the same problem... seemed that some sub-mods interfered with the new 6.4 installation... after deleting the SS folder and re-installed the 6.3 and then the 6.4 installation it started working...

for me, I think it was the One-city mod that did it... although I had about five or six sub-mods installed at the time...

but as newt said, Program files folder might also be an issue...

I had this error too. When using the ss6.4 installer right click and click "run as administrator". worked for me

The file is in Program Files (x86) where my M2TW is located.

I'm doing the reinstall right now.

    I'll see if that works.

I've seen that installing it outside of Program files works. Would I need to install ss6.3 to a different location instead of my M2TW mods folder?

Sorry for the double post. I realized this after the fact. Promise, won't happen again.

SS just needs to be on the same drive as M2

Anywhere within my C:/? Does it matter if it is in the same folder?

It's best to put it in your M2\mods folder, because the launcher sometimes can't find M2 on some people's systems. But you could put it anywhere on c: and see if it works.

So I uninstalled the 6.4 patch using uninstall 00001.exe because uninstall 0000.exe said taht the uninstall0000.dat was corrupt.

After uninstalling, my ss6.3 folder is still there, but several of the subfolders contain little info.

When I tried installing 6.3 again, I got a message telling me to insert disk 1. I also cannot find the .bin files that I used to have. Will I have to redownload the .bin files to install the game?

    Any suggestions?

Here is what my ss6.3 folder looks like in the file stream c:/program files(x86)/medieval ii total war/mods/ss6.3.
Inside this folder I have the folders data, packs, preferences, saves, and uninstall.

All the files seem to be missing from these folders except for the old file here and there and the file uninstall000.exe.
Okay. I found the .bin files hiding out in my recycle bin, for some reason. I blame the wife.

I'm running a fresh install of 6.3 into my c:/program files(x86)/medieval II total war/mods/ss6.3 folder.

Last time, 6.3 worked fine installed by itself. The installation of 6.4 caused all the trouble. I'll keep you posted.
Any thoughts for where to install 6.4. I'm going to try installing it using run as administrator and see if that fixes it, and I will choose one ai and leave everything else blank.

Delete the folder and reinstall. Yes, you need the bin files

After a fresh install of 6.3. Then re-installing 6.4 by Running as Administrator and choosing only the AI, I think it works.

Do any of you know if Permanent Arrows will work for 6.4?

    Thank you so much.

Everything should work. Run SS_setup as admin
