    Default Scholarii Question

Do the default scholarii use chainmail?

I tested some battles and the Scholarii defeat Gothic Knights and Gendarmes in Grassy Plain.
The main reason why win is because of the unit size. However, even with plate-armored gothic knights with sword upgrade, they still lose to Scholarii.

    Were they that strong?

I think the Scholarii may be too strong for their armor.

Edit: I know the other thread was closed, but this was from some testing and I was curious from a historical perspective.

If the Frankish knights can defeat them, they must not be all that strong.

The scholarii have 3 layers of armour

    1. Padded overcoat
    2. Lamellar
    3. Chainmail.

That is why they are so heavily armoured. Plus they get an armour bonus from riding armoured horses.

Where on that wikipedia page does it say that Scholarii fought in that battle?

Oh and a friendly moderator warning. No-one turn this into yet ANOTHER Roman troll/whine thread. Getting pretty sick of those.

They are like Jedi's on Horses and if you play without RR (like I do) you can recruit them right away which is pretty tight. They are very strong.

That's an error - even without rr/rc, CBUR made it so Scholarioi cannot be recruited until the Lateran Council event

In addition to the book CC mentioned, you might want to check out the two later "Byzantine Army xxxx to xxxx" books by Osprey

Which one? There were 4 Councils of the Lateran. The first were in 1123, and the fourth in 1215.

It supposed to be the third Lateran council.

Remember, the Scholarii fight with maces, therefore they are AP and beat most armored cavalry.

Yeah, I can't find scholarii battles.

Well, the best tactic I found was to employ regular pikemen and use pistoleers to hit them from behind. You will gain a victory always through this method. (same price approx)

    1 UNIT of:
Pistoleers alone run out of ammo.
Mounted crossbowmen run out of ammo.
Nukeri (Mongols) run out of ammo.
Mounted Arquebusier run out of ammo.

Edit: I did find this though. http://inlinethumb18.webshots.com/58...500x500Q85.jpg

That must have been pretty puffy.

Kept them very well protected. I've read that the armour was capable of stopping blows with lances in a charge. And the padded coat over the top stopped them from overheating in the sun.

I think the padded overcoat would have cushioned the lance, decelerating it significantly before hitting the lamellar. I guess thicker padded armor would have been better.

At the same time, if it was too thick, then lighter spears might get stuck (no idea) within the armor, which would cause the soldier to fall or disorient them.

Change the number of soldiers in the unit and fight the Custom Battle again so it's even.

I always wanted to know if scholarii recruitment is limited to Konstantinopel for the whole game.

Seemingly they have restricted recruitment (only in constantinople and after a x year to x year) but they are very powerful indeed. If they had such armour in reality they would be like tanks mostly. In game, I barely can fight them, and as in a previous thread said that could find no way to kill them. With RR disabled they are recruitable at any time and the AI spams them like crazy and uses them in all of their armies. It'll be fixed in a future patch as it has been said. They look like parthian cataphracts from RTW really powerful.

Where can I find references on these guys? Can't seem to find any.
Cassius: "Our men at arms have secured the city. We've received representatives from all the best elements. The senate is with us, the knights are with us."
Brutus:"The pontifs, the urban cohorts, the lictors guild..."
Antony: "Oh, the lictors guild, very good. Only rally the bakers and the flute players and you can put on a festival."

In RR/RC you can recruit Scholarii starting in either 1200 or 1215. I'm guessing it's 1215, but a simple perusal of the text files will reveal the answer.

Yeah it's around these years but if I remember in the EDB it was the third council
