    Default Anger

Playing as England, just finished whipping France. HRE gets antsy about me on their borders, I guess, and declares war, attacking Metz.
The Pope dies. My full piety cardinal stands most likely to be elected as Pope next turn. -End Turn-
My living saint of a cardinal is somehow burned at the stake . An HRE cardinal is elected as Pope, who of course hates my guts. Instant excommunication, crusade declared on Paris. The HRE, Spain, Milan and Denmark all hop on board, and send huge armies
First game coming back to Medieval after a long time, too, while waiting for my new laptop.
Long live the USA and all of its allies! Etc..

Get your defenses ready, and keep in mind:
Don´t attack a crusading army, lest it will destroy your relations with all catholic factions...

Whenever there is a crusade called on you, let them take the settlement, and take it back later

Evacuate your Paris garrison now. When the crusaders arrive, let them take Paris without a fight, and then the crusade will end. Then you can attack/bribe the invaders.

And send a diplomat to Rome as soon as possible to pay off the pope and buy recommunication. If you do that before the invaders take Paris, you'll end the crusade.

He's ENGLAND! He has eight quadrillion longbows! Why would he abandon Paris and risk the buffoons we know as the AI sacking buildings?

And if he does fight, instead of evacuating? The first enemy stack that hits him will deplete his garrison, and as soon as he can drive that one back another will besiege Paris. And another, as there are four crusading factions and the Papal States could possibly send an army of its own. Emperor_Palpy does not provide a timeframe for this campaign, but I assume he doesn't have cannon towers and cannot exploit them to sally forth. If he does defend and sally forth, it will kill his reputation and his standing amongst other factions, particularly Catholic Factions. And he would need his own full stacks nearby to support Paris. If I were playing in this situation, I would rather risk a sack, and use the time to make peace with both the pope and the crusaders as once the crusade is over the marginal crusaders will withdraw, leaving the HRE to deal with.

EDIT: the more he fights back, the more he prolongs the crusade and the states of war with Spain, Milan and Denmark.

You know France isn't one province like in Empire, right? He can send units from Normandy or any of the other castles in the area.

After 10 turns, new armies can't join the Crusade. All he has to do is kill the generals and he'll be safe for another 20 turns.

Indeed it will. Send a group of longbowmen to assassinate the Pope and get reconciled.

Well, I haven't actually played Empire, but I figure that if he managed to whip France his armies are depleted, and if he is playing Vanilla he'll have a tough time replenishing his losses due to the ridiculous castle/city divide. And while you are right that new armies can't join after 10 turns, I would rather find a peaceful solution to the crusade (and the excommunication issue), and then the factions that loaded up on expensive mercenaries will be forced to pay upkeep. Why let them have a free ride?

5 units of archers 1 general 4 cavalry the rest knights.mass them all in the plaza and exploit stupid ai.they will siege you lose everything and you will end up losing no more than 200 soldiers for each stack.at least thats what i did in crusades.never evacuate.the game lose its interest and it is exploiting the game mechanic.if a crusade target was taken and then retaken the crusade continued

So you all know, it's about 1150. The HRE crusade army took the city, though I inflicted significant casualties (~60%, thank you longbowmen, even if depleted)
Then I murdered the Pope .
The new Pope is Venetian and almost immediately excommunicated both Sicily and Milan, so there's a giant war going on in Italy (Papal-Venetian alliance vs. Sicily & Milan, who are also at war with each other. It's mostly being fought around Rome ).
And what is great for me is the former crusading armies all started attacking each other. Paris has changed hands at least twice now. I'm waiting for them to grind each other down so I can take my city back

What I still don't quite understand is how my perfect cardinal was burned at the stake!

I love nothing more than defending a fully stacked city from a Jihad/Crusade. As the Byzantines I fought off 5 stacks (2 Egyptian/2 Mongolian/1Turk) with only 1 turn to retrain my best troops. It was the RetroFit mod so the boiling oil really helped too.

You've been given a unique and very golden opportunity to take (and keep) Rome without additional consequence, and replace the Pope (with a potential reconciliation) in the same strike, if you can strike quickly enough from Marseilles.

Then turn and wipe out Milan. Seriously, the prospect of losing Paris for a while is trivial versus the early gain of northern Italy. You can always retake Paris with fresh forces from London.

FULL DEFENSE AGAINST CRUSADERS! Then make 1-2 full army to Toulouse, make invasion to Rome (while others are in Paris) and kill pope and reselecting coming. Problem solved
