    Default Carthage or Macedonia?

    First of, thank you for this wonderful mod!

    Now, I play as Rome and it goes quite well my really main problem is the constant attacking from Carthage and Macedonia.

    I took Carthage once but lost it after perhaps 10 siege battles and have taken one city from Macedonia otherwise I have concentrated on building up my cities and take some settlements to the north.

    So the question now is: which faction should I try to take down first? I have tried to make ceasefire with both of them but it turned out unsuccessfully at both faction. What is your opinion?

    You can always do what I do when their is a troubling civ: Invade their main base closest to you (Carthago, for carthage) and raze that to the ground. You get a ton of money for depopulating, then a ton more for demolishing all the buildings (the naval base alone is 20,000 denarii). You don't have to hold on to it, and if it rebels from you there is a pretty significant chance that it will become Roman Rebels, and you have essentially implanted an threat into the enemys heartland that you dont have to pay for. I'm afraid I am not much help vs Macedon because in my campaign they are getting owned by the Greek City States.

    You should probably start with Carthage, because once you kill it, and then the Gallaeci, you will reach the edge of the map and noone will bother you from that direction. But if you occupy Greece, you will just end up bordering several annoying factions and it will never end.

    I agree with Kozmonavt. Destroy the Carthies, destroy the Gallaeci, and then you can close off that God-forsaken "Iberian-front" forever. (Minus the occasional brigand or so but I don't really count them.)

    Alright then, Carthage is the first target then. Thank you all for the advice. Also, should I target Africa or their areas in Spain first?

    Probably Africa, it's very easy to take (Carthage is the only seriosly fortified city) and then you can attack Spain from two sides. With numidian cavalry.

    When in doubt, kill everything!

    I agree with taking Africa if you're not feeling particulary suicidal

    So Spain is most defended? Strange, I have always thought their provinces in Africa would be more and better defended. Oh well, just have to change the direction of that army then XD

    Just a quick Status report:

    - my army of around 2 000 soldiers were sinked by pirates...120 ships against 181 pirate ships...damn pirates.

    Haha, this thread really helped me out. I'm playing as Rome as well and I went after Carthage. I had to recruit over 5,000 men from Rome to northern Africa to constantly resupply my legions. I've managed to hold Carthage and all their cities east of Carthage, now I'm almost to the Iberrian Peninsula. However the army upkeep is beginning to take a toll on my economy. So I may do what was suggested and just pillage as I go.

    Of course I'm getting a CTD now every time I end turn, so I just may have to start over. I'll dread this since it was a narrow victory I had over Hannibal with my beginning army at M/VH.

    @Hakazu

    I forgot what building it was (Large Foundry maybe?) in Rome, but all of my units recruit with the little silver sword and shield now. So now I have complete naval and land superiority with units. This really benefits when fighting the masses of ship incursions and stacks coming at your armies.

    That's your problem. You tried to transport an entire army on a SINGLE unit of biremes. You may as well have just disbanded the legion. At least you'd still have the money you wasted on the bireme then.

    I never, never ever, never ever ever try to transport an army on less than a 5 unit fleet, and I prefer to not use less than 10 unit fleets. Using less than 5 is just asking for trouble.

    Yeah, got that building which is constantly saving my troops from defeat ^^

    @Tilorius Coilean Hibernus
    It was actually 2 units of biremes, but hey who is counting ^^ Anyway, until I have established a stronger navy my legions are currently taking the longer way to kick some ass in spain since they are currently harassing one of my settlements there XD

    Invade Carthage first - then Macedonia.

    Or send a stack to Carthage and a stack to Macedonia and conquer symultaneously.

    Okay, after have been in constant battle in Spain I have most of the area under control, only 4 or so left (2 Carthage and 2 Roma Rebels) defeated Galeric (or something) after they betrayed me and was constantly pissing me of. Just got the legionary army, so it will kick ass pretty soon.

    Was able to make peace with Macedonia after I lost my province there, was worth the lose I think. Instead I was attack some other Barbaric clan, currently building up an army to kick them, then Dacia decided to join the fun and attacked. And at the same time Boli declared war to. OMG!

    Any advice? Which should I concentrate on or should I try battle them all at the same time?

    The Carthaginians and Gallaeci can be contained if you have an army in Emporiae and support it with reinforcements from Massillia. Blockade the Carthaginian ports and employ a "Greece first" strategy. This is only one option, mind you. Take the Greek cities of Syracuse and Salonae, and push through to Pella and Thessalonika, then drive south and take Pharsalus and the Pelloponesus. Sparta will most likely turn on you and solve that problem. Take Crete and Rhodes before turning your attention West.

    If you develop the ports and infrastructure in Greece you can make more than enough money to take Hispania and Africa. By this time the Averni will be causing trouble as well, and after Africa is taken the decision for you at that time will be to drive further into Thrace and Asia Minor or into Gaul.

    May Mars Pater Victor be with you.

    Can I block Carthages port or something so they can't send over reinforcement to Spain from Africa?
