To my understanding, Hard and Very Hard campaign difficulties result in an automatic gradual decline of reputation. Because of this, I play M/VH.
I feel like I'm ticking all of the boxes for a good reputation, but it always ends up bad.
1: Avoid multiple alliances, because eventually you'll have to choose between allies and turn on one. I usually even avoid ALL alliances, because I'm not sure if there's an obligation to supply military assistance in their wars or not.
2: In a similar vein, be careful of all diplomatic deals. Don't be friendly to the enemies of friends, or hostile to the friends of friendlies.
3: Don't attack a faction unless they attack you first.
4: Don't continue battles after being given the option.
5: Release prisoners as often as possible (I've even taken this to the extreme of releasing all prisoners).
6: Make deals you know you can hold up, such as offering to attack rebels for a couple hundred florins, and then holding up your end of the bargain. Also "regular tribute" would also presumably add to your reputation when you stick to the dela.
7: Have a chivalrous king (I think this helps...).
8: Don't use spies/assassins extensively (I try to avoid it entirely... or at least, avoiding their missions entirely, but spies can be useful just for their line of sight, as scouts).
Even doing all of this; just sitting in a corner of the map turtling and making sure to be as honest as possible my reputation still seems to drop more than it improves over time.
What am I missing?
