    Default Quick mercenaries question

    Hi all,

I am thinking about making some more units available as mercs in different regions (like viking raiders in Scandinavia).

Is it enough to simply add 'mercenary_unit' to the entry in EDU and add them to the pool in descr_mercenaries? Or do I have to create a new seperate entry in the EDU? The reason why I ask is that there are a number of units in the EDU that appear both as non-mercenary and mercenary entries (such as Welsh Longbowmen).

I have tried adding 'mercenary_unit' to the Viking Raiders entry but this caused the unit to disappear from the roster in Custom Battle and only appear as a mercenary in the bottom. Does it cause the faction to lose the unit? Because I still want Denmark to be able to recruit Viking Raiders as usual.

    Thanks in advance.

You have to add a 'merc' listing in battle_models.

Yes I know that one (forgot to write it), but what about the other stuff?

You want a merc, the only thing you missed was the battle_models entry. That's all. The other stuff you mention is irrelevant to your question.

What I wanted to know was whether I could simply add mercenary_unit to the EDU entry of a unit, or if I need to make a new EDU entry all together. I have made merc skins and I understand both battle_models, descr_buildings and descr_mercenaries.

You don't have to make another unit unless you want it to have different stats, or unless you want another unit in other words.

Okay, so the extra merc units in EDU are actually just taking up space (like Welsh Longbowmen mercs)?

If there is no difference then there is no use for 2 entries for the same unit.

I think I just repeated my previous post.

Go on, ask me again, I love to repeat myself over and over

A unit that is marked as mercenary_unit will use the merc textures for all factions. If you want factions to have their own version of the unit (i.e. different texture) then you need two units in EDU, one with faction specific textures, one with a generic merc texture.

The welsh longbowmen in your example have faction specific textures in one unit, and the merc texture in the merc unit, meaning the units are different. If all the textures for the non-merc unit were the same for all faction and all the stats were the same for all factions then you only need one of the units.

Right so there IS a reason for the extra merc units. Thanks!
